We raised ours full free range and finished them on a mash of grains, raw milk and finisher. We offered one to a local restauranteur who has had them in France. He said ours were as good. There is something about generations of effort that actually do result in some amazing outcomes. There are...
Hi Fun, years ago we got some locally from a woman who claimed to have imported them herself… but she wasn’t fond of saying how… lol. They were great but hard to get more of. So over the past few years we got Black and Red from Greenfire. They’ve been excellent.
The answer is: it depends. What do you mean when you say: "Are they all they're cracked up to be?" If you mean, are they an outstanding meat bird, the answer is "yes." You won't find a better bird for raising on pasture if your sole goal is meat. We started working with Bresse many years...
Hi there. At the moment we are down to just two hens. We started the winter with four, but it’s was a tough season. I think the challenge in France is the same everywhere- too few folks interested in working on the breed. Hard to say why, but the Lyonnaise is a bit obscure and without a great...
Hi there... curious where you purchased these from. We have some of the last genetics from Greenfire Farms (purchased their breeding stock when they moved on). We currently have curly hens, a flat-feathered roo and a curly roo. Looking to add some diversity. Would love to know more about...
Thanks everyone, appreciate the kind words. Just wanted to let you all know that we have plenty of PP hatching eggs right now at Sunbird Farms if anyone needs any. Just shipped some to @rnott1 this week. Have a good one everybody! -Brice
We use open bottom tractors, but that works with coyotes, not sure about your critters. I've seen a number of people use old cotton trailers for mobile houses to great effect. They are about 8'x20', require some construction, but work quite well. I'd concur on electric netting
Btw, we will have some again this fall, my brother is taking up the breed. They're amazingly thrifty and productive, laying a beautifully colored large egg.
SJ... wow, it's been so long since we've revived this thread. Thanks for giving it a sit, I still believe in it I'm considering mixed-flock grazing this year, but I've never gone mixed species. I know there's a lot of examples out there, and I'd love to know how it works for you...
That's a shame... we've experienced similar accidents here ourselves, unfortunately. I'd like to know more about your fermented feed. I was using mixture of peas, corn, oats and wheat. Fermented in water with raw apple cider vinegar. My birds loved it, but I saw some egg eating that...
Hi there Rioux, thanks for trying to freshen things up around here. It has been awhile since we had some good conversation going on. It is a good thread and I'd be happy to see it come back to life. Are you currently running an Isbar over your Bresse hens, or did I misunderstand that? Tell...
Hi All,
We have a breeding pair available in California. This pair is about 11 months old and has a wonderful temperament; about as friendly as any chickens we've had. We have hatched chicks from this rooster and have been very pleased. We are currently in need of some breeding pen space...
Hi friends…we have a mature pair of WFBS that we'd like to find a home for as soon as possible (weather heating up). This pair is absolutely beautiful, and about 12-14 months old, and really great representations of the breed. We had a flock of 5, but sadly lost three to predators. This is the...
We have a trio of brown Marsh Daisies from Greenfire Farms. They are some of the rarest egg-layers in the world, and wonderfully thrifty in their foraging. These svelte birds are excellent for free-ranging, and deliver a delightful tinted egg. They've just started laying last week and should...
Friends,
We have a trio of brown Marsh Daisies from Greenfire. They just started laying about a week ago. We also have three juvenile blacks, not certain of their sex but looks like 3 cockerels, or 2 hens and a cockerel. All of these were sent as "packing peanuts," and while we care very...
