Well, I can finally see the ground, so I'm starting to lay compost and redo the drip system and start seeds. Finally.
And my bee hives are flying today.
My roo died, along with a hen, of some random issue. Totally weird.
Hatched out a mess of chicks, and I'm hanging onto them to see who is what...hubby says why do you want more chickens? but you can't have too many SFH! I put more in the incubator a few days ago to see what else we can get...
Hived my packages yesterday, no gloves, and they are flying today. Setting up, etc, and going to watch them today has been a good thing for my mental and emotional health.
My Pyrs have been amazing, purely amazing. No predator losses since they came, and I can count the puppy mistakes (my mistakes, really) on one hand, while a predator took 10-12 birds in one night last summer. It isn't easy, and I know many people who I'd never recommend an LGD to, but it has...
I do. A friend of mine lives in a subdivision in Calvert and got it waived because her husband has MS and the chickens are like therapy for him...he loves to go out and look after them. His health is failing, but the birds are keeping him going. But it was a tough road, and for a while, they...
I might. One of my roos looks to be sick, and I suspect cardiac disease :( I came home from my VA trip to find him just off, and he isn't improving. And I would love to add some ladies, as I must separate out my EE hens...the ones that were supposed to lay blue eggs...nope. A couple of them lay...
Well, I did it. In my car right now are two complete 8 frame medium hives. I got 3 supers per hive that were preassembled, to get me rolling, and 3 more per hive to put together as needed, so I have 6 supers per hive, plus some odds and ends, like feeders and tools and such, as well as...
Well, I make an annual trip to Staunton, VA in March, and I randomly learned there is a beekeeper's equipment shop not far from my conference. I'm planning to go pick up 2 triple medium 8 frame hives and some extra supers to haul home. I've recently learned a friend's father keeps a lot of bees...
It's just a Mann Lake cotton/poly. I was going to order from Mann Lake directly, but I had an Amazon gift card and Amazon points, so I paid nothing for it. If this ends up being something I get really into, I will upgrade to an Ultrabreeze. But to get started, this will be fine.
It would not be something you want to do for cats. Tubal ligation, which I'm seeing promoted by some groups, does NOT stop ovulation, which means a queen cat would howl and carry on every few days until she is "bred" and while she would not conceive, it wouldn't solve those behavior issues. Male...
I'm thinking about setting 18-20 SFH eggs tomorrow, eggs I've collected over the last week that we haven't eaten. I did the NYD hatch a long and then decided maybe I shouldn't set any more until it's less likely to storm...good thing, as we have lost power several times for a long enough period...
When they go through their first estrus cycle and therefore could conceive varies from dog to dog. In one LGD group I'm in, several owners had dogs cycle at 7 months. Mine is 10 months. Others don't cycle until they are 12+ months.
Grain free doesn't make a difference. It's the calcium level...
