My husband was getting really frustrated with getting the ducks to go in the coop at night. It took him ten minutes of herding and swearing, but when I do it it takes two minutes. He finally broke down and asked how I did it.
Simple, I just go into he run, say, "Bedtime feather butts," then...
Yesterday 4 of my girls decided to check out what I was doing ont he far side of the front yard. normally they're fine to be there but I was using some toxic stuff to strip paint so I didn't want them around.
At first they herded ok but then the two orps peeled off to try and get back to where...
Make sure you have a way to SECURELY attach it to the ground or something really heavy. My neighbor built a very nice PVC shelter for his hens and I had it on top of my goat shed after the next decent storm.
He found most of his chickens but not all of them.
I have a duck who regularly lays double yolkers. At least twice sometime 3 times a week she drops one of these huge eggs.
Is this goignot cause her problems in the long run?
There's no blood on the egg like it damages her to pass them.
Reminds me of a friend who had a gorgeous coop built including a seating area inside to sit and commune with her hens. Complete with shelves for chicken books, floral wreaths on the walls and little throw rugs. I laughed so hard when I saw it.
A week later there was a wire wall up between the...
Mine did the same, each one of them woud start laying then stop for a week or more before starting up again. Since then everyone's been laying just fine.
the only person I've ever had not like ducks eggs didn't like farm chicken eggs either. He preferred the bland runny store bought eggs.
With both to use I generally reach for the duck eggs first.
My 5 adult ducks and 6 chickens have a 5 g bucket waterer and a 4 gallon jug waterer outside. In the coop at night I have a 1 gallon waterer sitting in a rubber pan I put about 2 inches of water in.
It seems like a lot of water but they go through it fast and the ducks seem to like to eat...
I get 2 or 3 doubles out of my ducks every week, but none from my chickens. A double yolk duck egg is HUGE. The first time I showed one to my husband he said, "Ow!"
I am order bantie chicks for the first time next spring. Usually I expect to lose 1 out of 15 or 20 standard sized chicks. With banties being so small is their chick mortality rate higher?
I ask because we're goign in with some other folks on an order and need to end up with a minimum amount of...
You can get blue spectrum heat lamps from most pet stores. Unlike the red they won't encourage picking and they will give your birds a little warmth without keepign them awake like a regular bulb.
With the winds we have sweep thru regularly I just open the doors and gates for a while. No feathers left after that.
My neighbor was butchereing 45 birds on a very windy day earlier this summer. I looked up to see clouds of feathers blowing over my orchard and pasture. He must have...
Yesterday no eggs and I know they weren't hidden in the straw becuase I cleaned the coop yesterday afternoon. This morning 7 eggs:D in the ducks nest and I only have 5 duck hens.
Can ducks retain eggs internally for a day?
Sounds like they are all duck eggs. My duck eggs are larger and smoother than the chickens. They also lay on the floor, though they do lay in the nest boxes on the floor I gave them.
I used to live in town by a huge 40 acre park where I walked my LEASHED dogs frequently. I had several nasty encounters with a womans off leash cocker spaniels and started carrying pepperspray because of them. Not a week later I saw one of her dogs charge an akita mix of some kind and the akita...
