Wow..that is amazing. Maybe I should give it a try. Did you start her out with grown birds? I have chicks right now, no adults. I took one of the chicks up to the dog's yard and held it up to them. They were very interested. I think Bella would like to play with the chicks more than...
I think I will definitely do this with my next batch of babies. We have decided to get a few more chicks since I'm sure mine are not all hens. Getting younger ones will mean I won't have the option of turning the heat off at 8 am.
Thanks Jim. I guess I am just a little nervous about my dogs. The pit bull believe it or not is a total marshmallow and probably wouldn't hurt a chick much less a full grown chicken but my boxer is a natural hunter and I don't know if she can resist. Bella sniffs the ground practically...
I turned off the heat lamp when I left at 8am...left a 45 watt bulb over their brooder mainly for light as the garage is a little dark when the doors are closed. It is already 70 degrees here so I feel very confident that they are good to go. I just couldn't see leaving a 125 watt heat lamp on...
Thanks for the feedback. They were too hot today when the husband got home and they seem to spend most of their time as far away from the heat lamp as they can get. The youngest will be three weeks this weekend and the oldest will be five weeks on Sunday. I'm thinking since the brooder is a...
Well it's not just one square. it is basically the entire lid...hubby just leaves the perimeter of the lid so that he will have something to screw the hardware cloth to and so that the lid will still lock in place on the box.
Now I'm just confused. I think I will start turning the heat lamp...
I was thinking of having the coop beside the dog pen, not actually in it. Would that be effective at all or do you think the predators would figure out that the dog is not really a threat since it is behind a fence?
I seem to worry all the time now. They are just so darned helpless. We lost one Friday night too...it was awful. He was just not growing at all. They are in a rubbermaid container, large with a locking lid. We cut out the center of the lid and screwed hardware cloth to the lid so they have...
Yes....a very brave Mama!
I have five babies and had them in the yard running around a couple of days ago...hubby saw a hawk flying overhead (flanked by a couple of smaller birds, no doubt chasing him away from their nests). Hubby and I looked down to the chicks and they were all standing...
The brooder is in the garage so not out in the air. I just worry that they will get too hot in there before we get home after work. The brooder is big enough for them to get out from under the direct heat of the lamp but still if it is 90 degrees outside and the lamp is on I would think it...
Thanks...I need to find someone to go over after lunch and turn off the heat lamp I guess. I am too far away to run home at lunch and so is my husband.
