One of the reasons you may find your mileage will vary,( Velvett fog, Melabella,) has to do with them being hybrid birds. It means they have a father of one breed., and a mother of another. There are several combinations of Parents that can produce offspring that are Great Layers and "sex...

This was helpful info. I have been considering getting a few because they are Such prolific layers. It's good to know about their vulnerabilities. I would just add that sex link chickens are Hybrids, meaning their mother and father were of different breeds. Certain breeds are mated to create sex...

2500 sq ft pasture, 18 chickens

will they devastate it? If I let the chickens out into this yard when the plants are tall enough, and leave them there through fall, will the yard become a barren mud pit? looking to plant it with a foraging mix. Chicken coop directly over compost bin?

another way to think of "roughage" is high carbon stuff, to balance the hi nitrogen of chicken poop. or you can think of "brown (carbon) balanced with Green,(nitrogen)./ so, dried leaves, straw, hay, Old grass clippings, shredded cardboard... for coop plans, I can only recommend google...

Chicken coop directly over compost bin?

I like the idea even better now, with wire floor just under the roost and a trapdoor floor on the rest! maybe the chicken wire with smaller holes would be ok. Some manure would stick to the wire, so you'd need to be able to get to it to scrape it clean once in a while. Rats are the only think I...

@ YayChicks and JGFolk, Yes, They all are young. (Well, not so young 9 Mo!) but just beginning to lay.I guess they'll get the hang of it. @ TheReadyboys. Now, that makes sense. It was Cold in that coop. I ended up cooking the eggs before they thawed and giving them to the dogs.

Chicken coop directly over compost bin?

This is a cool idea. I like the way you are thinking . People do this with rabbit cages over worm bins. Fresh chicken manure is too Hot for worms though. The thing is, you couldnt use chicken wire,(well, I wouldnt anyway) because predators could get in. Also, I'm not sure how comfortable it...

Think it's too cold for your chickens? Think again...

Twice this week my chickens roosted high up in a tree and I could Not get them down. a few were in the coop,so I couldnt leave the coop door open, for fear of predators. So they stayed up there all night. One night it went down to 16F and the other night down to 11F ! I do think the rooster got...
