Sorry I have no answer, But I also had a hen (Golden Maran) (beauty queen) come stumbling out of the coop, 2 days ago, and she acted like she had Vertigo, her head was waving back & forth uncontrollable. I held her still, she got better, next day she seemed fine but when she looked up at me her...
Something interesting, my homegrown hen even had yellow bones. it was not from anything I put in the broth, nor was it from the yellow fat. ( i know cuz I had another carcass from an organic pastured chicken its bones were white) i do feed them tons of greens, kale, chard, I mean tons!
I'm not sure what age to process them . the roos need to be done earlier than the girls. I think they should not go longer than 15-16 weeks. as I've read. they can start to taste gamey. on the other hand, you can process an old hen for broth, and it will be delightful. BTW I just jarred my...
well folks its been 5 years since you all posted about flies. I opened my door this morning and 250 flies came in. (i may be eggzagerating) a bit. I'm thinking they reproduce in the chicken poo, don't you? well we tried the bag and water, penny thing a few years back, did not work. did the...
I actually do not feed corn to my girls, Non soy, non corn, Organic feed plus tons of greens even all winter I have a garden, and also sprout Black oil Sunflower seeds, and sprouted wheat. They are spoiled, and are part of the family, if a door is left open they come in. Happy hens too! Except...
I just butchered a hen that was just less than a year old, (something attacked her) she had to be put down. She was a Blk Copper Maran, she laid beautiful DARK brown eggs, her yolks were quite deep orange. I feed my hens bunches of Kale, swiss chard, or spinach fresh from the garden, they LOVE...
Of course You can give anything to chickens, well most anything, I throw all sorts of stuff out in the compost, they will scratch through and find tidbits. I'm not sure how nutritious it would be, maybe it would be like Fermented feed!
I think you should google feed stores all around and call them. surely there are feed stores that carry whole grains for feed. If they don't ask if they can order it.
I think chickens are pretty sturdy. I'm no official, but my observations are, I've seen chickens scratching and pecking through cow patties. ( e.Coli in cow patties, ??)
Hi Just checking in! I've been growing for about 2 weeks now. I have 12 hens. I use a cup of wheat, soaked 24 hrs, I put it in a Food storage container approximately 7" X 7". I have NO Holes. ( I couldn't bear to poke holes in them) 2 X a day, I soak each one for 5 minutes or so, drain off...
I can't find barley either. I think I saw some dish pans or containers at Dollar General for around $4. I didn't need ones so big. So I got the Glad food storage bowls, pack of 3 for $5. they had a larger rectangle one for 2 for $4.50. I was in a hurry to start so I didn't search it out...
jeronica, lucky you live there. I just started reading this post, got through to pg. 36, then skipped to pg. 313. I've been getting S&P for a few months now. I wanted to get started right away, and didn't have anything else. Although it does contain oats, and the posts say that doesn't do so...
scratch and peck offers "3 grain scratch", which is whole grain, wheat, oats and barley. no rinsing or losing other nutrients, but still a little more expensive. I have that on hand and going to try it for the first time.
Out of 13 hens, I've got 1 silkie, she's not quite 2, she is laying a watery egg, this winter. She doesn't seem sick. I'll put fresh hay in her coop. she tends to sleep on the floor, with her head down, maybe she's getting too much ammonia, as one of the conditions.
