MAINE: 1 Silkie bantam rooster (free)

Thank you! I hope so. Just don’t want him to go to a home that’s gonna eat him. He deserves a flock of his own. Happy New Year!

MAINE: 1 Silkie bantam rooster (free)

I’m looking to rehome one of our silkie roosters. He has gorgeous black/irridescent feathers and was hatched in July 2019, so he’s about 4 1/2 years old. We have a small flock and there’s just not enough hens between the two of them. He would do very well with his own flock of girls. We’re...

-20 degrees F here tonight, worried about my flock…

Update- they seemed to handle the cold just fine. I’m sure it wasn’t the most comfortable for them at the coldest point, but they came out of the coop perky and ready for breakfast this morning. I gave them a warm mash of oatmeal, corn, minced garlic, cooked egg, and flax meal, which they loved...

-20 degrees F here tonight, worried about my flock…

Yeah -104 is a new record for lowest recorded temp in the US, too. Mount Washington is a couple hours away from us. It’s definitely an extreme, I couldn’t imagine being up there right now. Growing up here you get used to the cold (heck I love the snow, until it turns into a slushy mess in...

    -9 tonight- heat lamp?

We’re in Maine too, -20 tonight and feels like -40…definitely worried about our flock, even with the heat lamp.

-20 degrees F here tonight, worried about my flock…

I’m in northern New England so we’re used to the cold but tonight is pretty rough. It’s getting down to -20 degrees F tonight and the weather app says it currently feels like -41 degrees with the wind chill. We have a small flock in a well-built wooden coop with a heat lamp on all winter, but...

It’s -17 degrees F here right now. Weather app says it feels like -41. 🥶 Gotta love Northern New England.

Lack of appetite, only eating cracked corn, weight loss

They’re fresh, I just bought the most recent bag about a month ago. I keep their pellets stored indoors in dry metal buckets with tight lids on them. We do sprinkle oyster shells in the run for them. It has been pretty hot here the last couple of weeks (at least, hot for this region). Upper 80’s...

Lack of appetite, only eating cracked corn, weight loss

Hi all, Something’s going on with my small mixed flock, health-wise, that I can’t seem to pinpoint. If anyone could offer any suggestions, I’d appreciate it! • I have two elderly Easter egged hens (10+ years old), a 3-4 year old copper marans hen, and two adult silkie mix roosters. They all...

    Impacted crop

Unfortunately she passed this morning. :( Turns out she also had coccidiosis along with the impacted crop, which is why she went downhill so fast. She was already weak from not absorbing nutrients effectively from the impacted crop, and the cocci bacteria took advantage of a weak host. If you...

Getting worse…treatment for impacted crop, lethargy

Update: She’s gone. I brought her to the vet and had her euthanized. :( I feel terrible…she was such a sweet, spunky hen with so much personality. She was only just over a couple years old too. I’m just relieved she’s not suffering anymore. Thank you for all your help.

Getting worse…treatment for impacted crop, lethargy

Update: nothing has changed. She is still doing the death throes…our vet is opening soon so I’m trying to get ahold of them to euthanize her. I can’t watch her suffer like this.

Getting worse…treatment for impacted crop, lethargy

Thank you. I don’t think there’s anything else I can do at this point other than comfort measures. I’m worried she’s suffering. She keeps doing this head twisting thing and her body is tensing up, as if she’s having a seizure. Ive heard this referred to as “death throes.” But she’s still...

Getting worse…treatment for impacted crop, lethargy

Oh no, why not any extra vitamins when treating with Corid? Will it hurt her? I wasn’t sure so I’ve still been offering her the nutridrench water because I was worried she would go downhill quicker without nutrients. Did I make it worse? :(

    Impacted crop

How is your hen doing? It seems I’m in a very similar boat with my hen. Got X-rays at the vet, confirmed she has impacted crop, vet recommended surgery but I can’t spend $300 to do that right now. So I tried giving her coconut oil and massaging, just like you’ve been doing. How is your hen’s...

Getting worse…treatment for impacted crop, lethargy

Update: she’s spending another night indoors. It’s not looking good; she’s much more tired tonight, she keeps lowering her head down as if she can’t lift it, like she’s falling asleep but keeps fighting it. Not sure she’ll make it through the night. Still giving her water with nutridrench in it...

Getting worse…treatment for impacted crop, lethargy

Update: her fecal float results came back from the vet. No round worms, so that’s good. But she has cocciodiosis. So I’m going to pick up some liquid Corid and treat her + the whole flock. My only concern with this is that I read you’re not suppose to give any vitamins in the water during Corid...

Getting worse…treatment for impacted crop, lethargy

Thank you!!! I’ll give this a try. I believe it’s mostly grain and grit in there, especially based on the X-ray. I recently started feeding them hearty hen pellets but Nutrena, and it seems this issue began right around the same time. I’m also offering nutridrench in her water, to make sure...
