I also know, that once my goose goes broody, she will sit on the nest. But is seems like the minute she gets off to go stretch herself, my dog is in the nest stealing an egg, grrr!
My goose builds the nest close to my house where my dog can get to it. My old dog doesn't do well confined. I figured I would rather confine my dog during the actual incubation time rather than the extra several weeks prior for my goose to lay her clutch.
Not sure if I made sense myself but I...
I have a pair of Pilgrims that I would love to let the goose hatch out her eggs. Last year the Mama goose did go broody but I had a dog that was stealing her eggs.
This is what I want to know if it will work---- As she lays her eggs, I will collect them until I get 8-10 or so. When I have a...
Being this is on the self sufficient forum, here is what I do.
Very similar to wyoDreamer. When I make my own beef tallow, I save the scraps to melt down and add peanut butter as well as many other veggie/fruit scraps, dried chili peppers and garlic pieces that are to have a health benefit...
I'm hooked! Since I have broodys, I wanted to have some different breeds other than the mutts I have been getting the last couple of years. Imagine a tophat Roo breeding with EE's, marans, RIR just to name a few. Most of those chicks come out looking like they are having the worst hair day ever...
I myself don't care much ramen noodles since Im not fond of the mushy texture. I have developed the taste for the Panda Express noodles. I want to duplicate it but don't know how. But we use rice noodles too and like those.
What you have planned sounds good. Let us know the outcome of your dish.
jenny,
I had googled 'canning forum' so I could research more on meats. A lot of sites popped up for me.
Googling will be quicker than me trying to post them. I hope you find one that is helpful.
There are other canning forums if you need more info on canning chicken.
I never have enough chickens (maybe 3-5 at a time) worth canning as all we do is process our excess roos that the broodys hatch out. I just breast them out and freeze them. I simmer the rest of the carcass and then I will...
FGG,
I cant help you much as far as comparing home canned meats to the stores because I have never bought canned beef before. And this is the first time I canned 'ground' beef. Just had a cow butchered and freezers are packed! So I thought hmmmmmm? I have not popped a jar yet but will soon...
I would compare your recipe to those in the BBB. If the variation is not much different as in spices and liquids, I would use the book as a guide line. I hope this helps.
Good luck.

Terri O,
I pressured canned kidney beans and they still seemed firm to us even tho the skin split during the processing. I too, like to have canned beans ready. My next project is to can pinto beans so that I can make my own refried beans. I will do the soak and can like I did with the...
I went online to get information and as I mentioned just adding a tad bit of water to the fat and cooking it low and slow worked for me. Eventually the water will evaporate but by then there is melted fat. You could say it was like cooking bacon but a lot longer. I think this process is quicker...
I would like to get my hands on pork fat (lard). My butcher cant sell it. But if I know someone getting ready to butcher a hog, I can ask them to request it. We butcher a cow every year and that is how I got the tallow.
They are great for baking. They add volume to your baked goods!
I know this for a fact because my daughter makes homemade brownies in a jelly roll pan. We have always used goose and duck eggs for the recipe. The baked brownies would almost over flow the pan. Twice, since the molting began we...
my geese and ducks are like my kids. they will stay out as long as they can. Even long after my chooks go to roost. If I want them in sooner, I have to herd them in. But about 1-2 hours after sunset, they go in on their own.
Have fun with your ducks. What kind are they?
I did two different methods and the one with less water worked better for me. I couldn't stomach the idea of eating the 'cracklens', so my chooks got to enjoy those. Cant wait til we fry fish to see if my time and effort was worth it.
