Do hens quit laying when another goes broody?

I have a tiny flock since the racoons got in the broken window. 2 boys and 3 girls. The Dorking went broody in Feb and since then I haven't found ANY eggs, even though the 2 Wyandottes were laying up to then. Am I nutz, or is it possible that they quit laying when their "sister" starting...

My chicks are only a few days old BUT

There's nothing as depressing as going out in the morning and finding a pile of feathers. If your coop is close to your house you hear them scream in terror in the middle of the night, and even if you run out naked you're too late. Just figure there's a HUGE SIGN OVER YOUR COOP IN PREDATOR...

Just resued two chicks and need help

thanks for rescuing those babies. Good for you and Good for the universe. I've got 3 babies in the house now; a first time for me. I've had hens raise two broods out in the chicken run and I'm trying as much as possible to reproduce the natural conditions. There's a heat lamp and 24 hour...

    New Chicken House- Predator/roost/etc questions!

STOP THE PRESSES! DON'T BUY CHICKENWIRE! USE KENNELWIRE! Hi, welcome to the world of chickens, you're gonna love it, and them. Raccoons will absolutely get in that space and climb in a clean you out, but chickenwire won't stop them. They can rip right through it. You have to get something...

Two Chickens one roo and a hen

They need to be together. This is chicken love. He'll become a better gentleman when he gets older. Once they're mating he'll share food with her and stop pecking. He will find tidbits and drop them for her, let her take food out of his beak and generally look out for her. That's the good...

    New Odd Behavior - help?

Dust baths are a natural tick control - doesn't mean your birds have bugs, but they are hard-wired to do this Also they'll dig big holes to cool down in the heat And don't freak when they lay down and stretch out one leg and wing and lay there looking like a crippled chicken - it's a thing...

Australorp and Wyandottes - advise please

I've had 4 silver laced Wyandottes for 3 years. Never broody, and good egg production. They come when called but aren't affectionate I used to have a white leghorn who jumped on my shoulder and rode around the yard, sat on my lap to snooze. Weasel got her - I really miss ol Betsy Cluck.

    hen scratch

If they're outside on dirt and able to pick up tiny stones and such they don't need commercial grit. But scratch is entertainment for them - I definitely think you should scatter something for them to scratch at. I use wild bird seed mix and they love it.

Does anyone here sell their eggs?

How do you want to sell them? I live on a rural island outside of Seattle and my neighbors put up signs by their driveways: Free Range Eggs or Free Range Organic Eggs or Free Range Fertile Organic Brown Eggs the first goes for $3.25 on up to $4.50 a dozen for the last Amazing, huh?

Help! too many roos, racoon, sitting hen, crabby mom, old dog, sheesh

Six years of chickens and never had this problem before. 1. a racoon killed "Mama" so I kept the other 4 in the fenced run until I could trap it. I can't trap it!! The little bugger won't go in the trap, and he's still around because I've seen him. My aged Rottweiler is no longer able to...

    Reintroducing a Rooster

HI, If this is your only roo there should be no problem. The girls like boys, and he's the same size or bigger so they won't pick on him. Shame about the zoning.

Need Support to End Mayhem Soon!

I've never had a mean hen or rooster - is this something that comes with bigger flocks? I've always had a rooster, except when one got killed and we had to find a replacement, just a few weeks. Our flock has never been more than seven chickens - one rooster and hens. Our hens have been white...

    9-week-old pullet started crowing...

When a raccoon got my roo the dominant hen started crowing; when I got another rooster she stopped.

    Why does he do this?

I think you'd better accept the inevitable. I didn't want them on our deck so trained our Rottweiler to bark and chase them off - she never chases them in the yard, just off the deck, or so I thought... So just when we thought we had the problem solved, I return from shopping and there's the...

Is your Roo really involved in the "hen's business" ?

I'm on my third rooster now and they all do that - not sitting, but very protective of their girls. I love roos! They are true gentlemen. They free range around here and they find good nesting spots and coo to the girls to come and lay. A hen will come over and the two will sit, the roo...

    Strange baby flock behavior

you are so lucky! I've got baby chicks with their mom - they run from me, but in the evening they all cuddle around her and she sings to them. They're still pretty young, just a week old, maybe they'll start singing too. It's a soft quiet sort of cooing. If chickens could purr that's what it...

    Question about Wyandottes

My silver laced are pretty - 2 years old now, but they're not the great layers that leghorns are. They were slow to develop, are very shy of me, won't get close, and they molt early and don't lay for about 3 months. Light brown eggs are smaller than leghorns, too. I probably won't get them...

    Coop idea.. would this work?

just one caution: how strong is that plastic and can a racoon bite through it? Can any potential predator bite through? If possible, then don't use it! There is nothing like finding your coop invaded and all your darlings dead.
