Well she is poopy-bum free. I'm wondering if I'm doing the right thing, though. She has a ton of what I am assuming is bruising around her leg. (It is green) I am sure there is something going on there. She can't seem to put weight on it (though she tries). I don't know if its broken, it doesn't...
When I put her back out I'll have her by herself in the chicken tractor so she can be with the other chickens but still be protected.:)
She has only been standing for very short periods of time. She poops sitting down as well and doesn't move away from it. So
1) How long is it likely to...
I have some blue-kote somewhere. I will look for it. Should I apply that once per day? I am planning on doing the diluted iodine flush 2-3 times per day. I imagine the blue-kote would go on afterwards?
Just an update for this morning. She seems much less shocky/more alert. She is standing for short periods but seems to have a "droopy" wing. I made her some scrambled eggs this morning and crushed a tiny bit of children's asprin into it for her, and flushed her wounds again with iodine. She ate...
Thank you everyone! She is definitely shocky right now. She is set up in a plastic tote inside and there is a towel over it. I will move her water a bit closer and give her some food as well
My husband found one of our chickens wounded in the driveway about 20 minutes ago. He brought her inside. She has 3 puncture wounds on her back, so I am almost positive she was attacked by a neighbor's dog.
I flushed the area with peroxide and dilluted iodine. She is set up in a plastic tote...
Thank you. I would like to have layers and just butcher excess. They are such fun already. I did a little searching and Purina's website tells me one of the feedstores in my area caries "Game Bird Startena," which I believe it said was 30% protein. Is there such a thing as too high of protein...
Thank you Chick Charm- I was told 20% and up! Yikes. That means the game bird food I was looking at is insufficient as well. I think I'll make a trip to a bigger feed store and see what I can find there.
I know quail need higher protein % than chickens.. However I don't love the price of gamebird feed. Can I feed them 20% protein regular chick starter, or do I need to find something else? They are about 5-6 weeks old.
Thank you- I've got a friend coming over this week to help me process him.
I'm curious as to why they do this too. I know that my rooster is mating with all of the hens, I've seen him, but he just torments Missy to no end. When he is mating with her he pecks at her and pulls her feathers out...
We had a rooster show up a little over a week ago, he seemed to be fairly respectful of the hens so I let him stay. However he has been chasing my barred rock hen, Missy, relentlessly. He's torn a huge gash into the back of her neck as well as pecking at her cone and the top of her head is...
Aggiemae, that's a great idea. I went ahead and put the x-pen in the run and put up a tarp for cover in case it rains, but I'm a bit worried the chickens will hop over and bother the chicks so I will do the plastic netting, plus that frees up my x-pen as i use it quite a lot for various things.
Thanks for all the feedback!
Hahah, I guess 40's seems really cold to me since its Texas, so I thought they'd be cold. They are almost completely feathered now though (a couple of them still have some silly fluff on their heads, and most of them are a little bit bare under their wings). I will...
Oh, I forgot to ask.. do they still need a heat lamp? I'm in Texas, our lows through the next week are 44 at the lowest and it looks like 50's later in the week. It's been in the 80's during the day so their lamp has only been on at night.
My chickens are free ranged during the day, only locked in the coop at night, so they've seen the chicks when they're in the x-pen. By x-pen I mean basically this: http://www.jindos.com/jindo/care/xpen.jpg
I might be able to figure something out for putting the chicks in the big chickens run...
Thank you! I wonder how long it will take before they're that big, haha. They're starting to try to fly out of the brooder when I open it. Maybe I can make them a little run off of it so they can enjoy the grass and sunshine. Its getting a bit tiresome lugging them back and forth from the...
I have 12, 5-week old chicks. I also have 6 fully grown hens and a rooster. I'm wondering at what point the chicks can head to the big coop? I don't want them to get beat up by the adults.
