Here is a picture of my silver laced wyandottes at 12 weeks. You can see by the size, color of comb, and feathering on the tail that one is a hen and one a rooster. The rooster did not have the nicest color pattern. I had rehome him to a farm that needed a rooster because we can't have...
My poop board is encased with 1x4 boards on all four sides to keep the PDZ in so none of the ends of the coro plastic are accessible to bugs. I did use some of the left over pieces under my nesting boxes and small ants decided to build in the little tunnels so I had to take them out but they...
I used a sheet of corrugated coro plastic (like those cheap signs you see along the roads) to line the bottom of my poop board. Bought it at Home Depot for couple of dollars and cut it to size. Works great!
That is a good idea. It may be that they are standing on the PDZ and not on the roost when they "overshoot" the poop board too. I made it a little taller so that I could easily scoop underneath it since I reach the board from the side of the coop and can't get at it from both sides.
My roost sits above a 48x24 poop board with 1x3 sides to hold the PDZ granular inside. I use about 2 inches of the PDZ because my hens only roost in the coop and don't seem to play in it or dust bathe. They really do not go in the coop during the day except to lay their eggs in the nesting...
If your coop is only 6 x 4 then I would use the granulated PDZ and get rid of all the shavings. You never have to change out the PDZ, you just add to it. Just like cat litter. It clumps and is safe for the chicks. Sure, the upfront cost of PDZ may be a little high, but down the road and many...
I would use the PDZ in the coop under the nesting boxes on the floor. In my run (4x8) where the hens stay if it is inclement weather and early morning and late evening for safety I use a couple bags of dirt, couple bags of sand, about four bags of pine bark mulch nuggets (untreated) and they...
Here is my hen, Thyme, sitting on the roost. She came to see what I was doing!!! We live in Florida and it is really hot so I used shutter doors (screened the inside for mosquitoes) for extra ventilation and the clear UV coated roof so it also vents and have a fan inside to keep the air...
I built a new coop and incorporated a poop board in it. Mine was 24 inches wide by 48 inches long for my 4 hens. I put a 1x4 white PVC board vertical along the side of the plywood and covered the plywood bottom with plastic core board (looks like corrugate cardboard but plastic found at Home...
The city of Palm Bay in Brevard County allows 4 hens per residential lot. No roosters! We are all on quarter acre lots here so clean coops are a must to make all the neighbors happy! And a gift of eggs now and again doesn't hurt!!!
The Funky Chicken Farm is definitely funky. Their farm appears to suffer from lack of maintenance, adequate care and shelter for the animals and the hens in the battery cages at the egg farms probably are treated better. I would not recommend purchasing anything from this farm. I purchased my...
Nice work! You might want to paint the metal roof white because it will bake your hens in the heat if you left it gray. I used the clear gray plastic grooved roofing on my run that has UV protection because here in Florida it gets very hot too.
What a cute coop! I also live in an area where chickens are not allowed, but my neighbors all know I have them and get eggs from me (I only have three hens). I have to tell you that my hens make LOTS of noise at different times of the day and if they are laying an egg, the egg song itself will...
My three hens lay three eggs a day 7 days a week. We are in the third week of the pox and I have only had two mornings where there were only two eggs in the nesting boxes, so they must not be feeling too poorly even though they look kind of funny!
My chickens figured out the nipple waterers within 20 minutes. Take away the other water sources and help them figure it out by hitting the stick that makes the water come out. They will figure it out. If they don't within an hour, then you might have to use another water source and give up the...
Thank you. I checked out other posts after I had read this post regarding eating the eggs and they said the same thing. My hens are about in the first week of this pox and they are all still laying the same amount and eating regularly and acting normal. I don't know if they just have a mild...
I have heard that the Easter Eggers are nice hens and hatch pretty eggs - do you like them? I don't know anything about the Lakenvelders. Since I could only have a few hens, I wanted them to be the same. If I had a bigger yard and more space, it would be nice to have some different breeds...
Really nice coop! Since I live in the South, my hens get a little bit on the warm side. I use a fan and put ice in their water to keep them cool. I will have to find the oxine because one of my waterers does not get used as much as the other and it is a little bit greenish right at this moment!
Love what you did with your chicken PVC water provider. I don't quite understand if you permanently fixed your two gallon bucket to the board and how the PVC on/off red valve underneath the bucket is outfitted, but quite nice!
