My RIR girls are five years old and they are still laying up a storm with the exception of one. I would think at only being two, they will still lay for you. But, I have heard that all breeds are different.
Thanks everyone. They are a mix between RIR and a Rooster that is some kind of mix. Here's a picture of Roody the proud papa! There are NOW 7 babies AND... I just received my order for 5 barred rock and 5 easter egger chicks today. I was also supposed to get 5 welsumers, but unfortunately they...
Levin, my Golden Retriever is a large boy... weighing in at 117 lbs. But he is very mellow and easily controlled. When my younger nephew and niece come over (8 and 10) he promptly walks beside them all over the property. I had taught him... "walk beside me" when he was a pup so he automatically...
At that age and temperature, I would say it is safe to remove the heat lamp. Each week you should drop the temp by 5 degrees. So at 3 to 4 weeks of age 80 degrees should be just fine for them.
If you decide to try out another dog, may I suggest a Golden Retriever. They bond quite well with kids. My 3 year old Golden will wait at our 1/2 mile driveway for my youngest son to get home from school. I also have a newfoundland that bonds to any child he sees. My daughter in law who...
Hi, I usually take away the heat lamp when the chicks are fully feathered. But that also depends on where I have them and the surrounding temperature. I once kept chickens in our spare room were I found they did not need the heat lamp as long as the ones I had outside.
I never did know what he or his sister was. I got the two fertile eggs from a local farm over four years ago and a friend hatched them out for me. He did have a clutch of chicks two years ago and one hen does have a rose comb. (however, the golden laced could have been her mom). I'm not quite...
I have had Roody for 4 years. When he was young I thought he was a Silverlaced Wyandotte, but after researching a bit, I discovered that he does not have the correct comb. The hen I got at the same time was a golden-laced wyandotte and she did have the right comb. Anyone know his breed or is he...
Ahh, I hope the little guys all right too. My baby's wounds were deep, on one side it almost looked like I could see brain or something smooth and white . Today, its pretty much scabbed over, one side looks very good and the other side is getting better. She may have some brain damage due to...
I am new here, so I am not sure if I am posting this in the proper place?!?
Here is a picture of my baby chicks so far. The two darker ones laying down are the newest additions
I had a chick hatch on the first of August that had open bloody wounds on both sides of his head. Not sure if she got pecked at by momma or another hen. To this date she is doing great. She is the bottom chick in my avatar photo. As bad as her wounds were I was afraid she would not make it, but...
Hi everyone,
I am a new member, but I have been reading the forum for a very long time. I have learned a great deal from everyone here so I decided to FINALLY join.
I have been raising chickens for the past 4 years. I currently have 13 hens (8 RIR, 3 RIR/Wyandotte(???) mixes, and two black...
