    Leg issue

The thing. Is this has happened in the last few days. She was totally normal when we moved her and her sibs to the big coop with my older hens a couple of weeks ago. I am willing to try to help her but the thought of nutrional issue did occur to me. Not sure if that info makes a difference or...

    Leg issue

What a lovely memorial day weekend. No emergency here but one of my 4 month old pullers has this issue with her legs initially thought she had slipped a tendon until I put hands on her. She is in a protected kennel with her own food and water with a vitamin supplement. I am hoping for some...

The incubator was still running at aprox 99.3 don't know exact humidity. The water pot was filled at lockdown and water was condensing on the sides of incubator. The chicks that died were the 1st and last to hatch. The 2 middles are doing great.

    hatching issue

Hi All, Just hatched my first group in 2 years. 4 chicks hatched but of the 4, 2 died before everyone was dry. The 1 death did not surprise me. Chick was malpositioned and had trouble hatching but did make it out without help. The surprise was the first chick to hatch. She hatched and was...

City bylaws and ordinances being i"nterpreted"?? Greenfield Massachusetts

Did this ignoramus actually write you a citation or give a notice of violation? If not, I wouldn't sweat it. keep the fluffy butts on your own property. Until you receive a notice of violation, its kinda just him running his mouth. I couldn't read the whole ordinance. I kept thinking...

feeding chickens grass scraps from fertilized lawn.

I think it depends on what fertilizer was used. If its just an NPK type fertilizer the grass is likely fine. If it had weed control products in it, I would not feed it to my birds. NPK fertilizer is basically what you get when they poop. No real issue there. Unfortunately many of those...

    Home Owners Insurance

I have state farm in TX and never had an issue. My agent has seen my chickens. Granted, he does not know I sell eggs, but with just 3 I can't imagine it would be a problem. Alice

    thin hens?

Pics suck. These birds all have full crops and act like they are always hungry. These are not super friendly birds so they don't get handled a lot but 1st pic is my oldest hen Thanks [/IMG][/IMG]

    thin hens?

Hey All, I guess I'm feeling paranoid. I've been at this about 3 years now. My birds just feel thin whenever I put hands on them. How does one tell if they are too thin? I had a RIR just basically drop dead in the yard. I was recovering from arm surgery and thus a necropsy was out of the...

City vs. County Ordinances, which take precedence? Midway, Kentucky

I should think if you live in the city limits, the county can get stuffed. Generally city rules override. Kentucky is a mighty strange place though so I would not bet the farm on that. Good Luck Alice

    chicken abcess

Opinions on what this is please. We were able to get some gunk out of one. Hen grew annoyed at being restrained before we could work on the other. I suspect abcess. The picture sick my new phone has no flash. Thanks Alice

    rhode island whites

Hey All, At what age should I expect them to start laying? I am thinking they are a slow to mature breed. My two pullets are 6 months old and are just now starting to fill out and look like laying hens. I love them. They are like puppies, but I know next to nothing about the breed. Thanks Alice

Please Help Brooding Hen Killed Last Night Have 10 Eggs 1 Week from Hatching

Wow Your Maine Coon is actually bigger that a bobcat. I am familiar with the breed. Had one years ago. Miracle is more like a domesticated house lion. I am sorry for Henny Penny and I hope your eggs all hatch, but that kitty gets lots of TLC and treats in my book. My 11 lb cat won't even...

Rules for The Coop that the books don't tell you. My experience as a newbie.

Been keeping chickens for about 3 yrs and have had most of those things happen to me. I have mostly managed to convice my girls that toes are not treats. All told though, very funny to read about. I got a good laugh and today I needed one. Thanks Alice

Looking for an automatic door opener for my coop.

Hey JoshR, www.chickendoors.com. They are not the cheapest, but they are the best IMHO. I know the guys that make them(full disclosure here). They are based very close to me and I was their FedEx driver for a while last year. Got the full tour and was very impressed with them and the...

    injured chickens

Hey all, I had a foster dog go through my flock like the Tasmanian devil. Lost 9 for sure. Have had some reappear from unknown hiding places and had to put one down this morning. The injured seem to be doing ok. I cleaned all wounds with hibcleanse. Poured it in and on. The birds are...
