What breed are your chickens?
Are they molting?
Some do better in the cold than others our EE stop when it was down to 10* at night.
Austrlrop, Cochin & Barred Rock & Morans still laying some we had a light on to give them 12-14 hrs. a day.
No heat lamp on them however.
They are very entertaining we all enjoy them help with stress relief for us.
Grand kids are learning a lot having these chickens here for us it's different than pets.
Chickens are good 4-h projects.
I like them for the exercise and as a hobby it gets me outside and off the computer chair...
I was at the store yesterday and asked when the chicks would be in they said mid Feb. 2-17 was the exact date I think it was.
So now is the time to be deciding this I've been thinking this over. It's time to think about this.

I would love to know what the different calls mean we have two roos at the moment and I've seen them do the
egg cackle they answer the roo up that way at 4 a.m. and crow off and on all day long.

I too am trying to decide what breeds for the addtl. hens as replacement stock.
I'm thinking RIR Rhode Island reds, and more clean legged Morans b/c I like the darker brown eggs like we used to get when I was a kid.

When I got some hens there were only two in the batch. Kept a couple and one we will keep for the 11 hens in the back yard but having
two is one too many. The loudest one was going to be in freezer camp but he got away to live another day.

I saw on U-tube some thing about a roo giving a special call for grasshoppers that hen preferred these for treats so maybe that's a bug call a roo was giving some one was mentioning!
It's so funny when we open the door they run out in a mad dash to get under the grapes their favorite treats...
