Thanks for the all of the information. I guess I picked the wrong hen. Oh well. I'll give her till next spring and see what happens. If nothing else I can find her a new long term home. In my belly! No, just kidding. I could never eat a pet of mine.
This will be my first winter with chickens, so I need to look into lighting them. The thing about this bird is the guy I got her from had like twenty chickens, in all age ranges. I just picked the biggest. But he had no idea which birds actually laid the the eggs he showed me. Maybe I got a dud...
I got this lady chicken off of Craig's List and was told she was a layer. Well that was about four weeks ago and I've yet to get a single egg. Is there a chance this chicken is either not old enough or maybe very old? Thanks for looking!!!
Thanks everyone. Seems like we have a mystery still. I'll retake pics in 4 weeks and see what develops. What areas of the chicken should I try and get photos of to help determine the sex?
Sorry for the poor chicken photos. This bird is quick! Just picked him/her up on this week. I was was told it was a three month old hen. But my last Ameraucana that sadly passed away at two months did not look this lean and tall. Anyone have any thoughts?
THANKS FOR LOOKING!
Well said ChickensRDinos. You made many good points.
We all love dogs and chickens I guess! Now all we need is a bug expert to take up their cause and this will be a perfect thread. lol :-)

Thanks for the replies. Most of the replies were spot on. I am new to chickens. My dog has never been around birds. I did underestimate my dogs ability to get at the chickens. All the other stuff that was said.
There is a lot to learn about chicken keeping, and this was a sad learning...
I see lots of posts about dogs and chickens with people having various tips about how to get the chickens and dogs happy together. From introducing the dogs to the chicks early on and lots of supervised exposure and the like. Well yesterday evening my 10 year old beagle, whom has been around my...
Thanks for the advice! I think I'll do pine shavings or such for my coop floor as well. It will look better at least. :-) In Sacramento it only deeps below freezing a handful of times at night per winter. And that is usually when it it not windy or stormy. Just calm and cold. So I think...
Hi all! My first post! I have three hens, all about six to seven weeks old. A Buff Orpington, an Americauna and a Black Australorp. I read a great deal about the brooding and construction from this great site before getting them and while building my coop and run. Currently the little ladies...
