Saved by the barn builders!! coyote problems..

You need 1 of these. He's a big teddy bear, but takes great offense when someone interrupts his lounging. The best part is that he's usually inside and his little sister (a 70# shephard) patrols outside. I have a upper level deck so I've been able to watch a few coyotes team up and try to get by...

Chicken ramp up to roost questions?

Thanks very much for the response (trying to get this done today!). I have a variety (including silkies) and they will be somewhat free-ranged so all wings of 'flyers' will be clipped. Currently they have a couple feet on two of the sides and a few on the front (btw the roosts and walls). The...

Chicken ramp up to roost questions?

I have the same question. My roosts are 4 ft off the ground so I'm not sure how easily they'll get up. I'm not sure if a ramp or a lower roosts to hop from would be better? Would greatly appreciate any feedback.

    Attaching pvc to hardware cloth?

That's plan A right now. Two pieces of wood to sandwich the cloth and then small bolts thru all 3 to make it very secure. Have to make 6 (3 4" and 3 2" so I was hoping for something easier that wouldn't waste my scrap wood. And yes, it is to feed. They have 3 4" pvc feeders and then smaller...

    Attaching pvc to hardware cloth?

So I have to put 4" pvc thru hardware cloth and am wondering what is the most secure way to do it? I'm assuming I could just put staples thru it and into the pipe, but that just doesn't seem too strong to me. Any ideas?

    Watering/feeding inside or out?

Their nesting boxes are inside. Good pt about the egg hunt and weather. I'm not as worried about predators, b/c my dogs are in the yard. I guess my big concerns are rodents (their feeders are going to be homemade pvc feeders attached to the wall) and birds deciding to roost in a tree instead of...

    Watering/feeding inside or out?

I've seen mixed suggestions so was wondering what everyone's reasons were. Should I provide feed and water inside the coop or outside? My coop door will be on a timer so I guess this will also dictate if the door stays open throughout the day or closes after the chickens leave. Right now, I...

    Questions about free range containment

I may have a rooster, but not sure yet. Do silkie roosters (only straight runs I got) have as natural a instinct as standards? As far as fence goes, do you think field fence is flimsy enough to prevent perching?

    Questions about free range containment

There is a very steep bank (5 ft) down to the water so the hope would be that they wouldn't even go close enough to worry about drowning. I let trees/bushes go crazy about 15 ft from the creek so I'm not too worried about hawks as they'd have plenty of cover. I do want this to be at least...

    Questions about free range containment

I'm not sure if I should call it free range or a run, but basically I want to contain about 20 birds in some form. A little about the property...I have 2.5 acres and half of it (the back and 1 side) is a creek that's about 20-30 ft wide and 1-4 deep. The birds will be in a converted two stall...

    Dog Breeds...

It sounds like you're doing research, but my advice would be to go off your research of breeds in general more than what you hear from 1 or 2 people. All breeds will have their 'outcasts', but in general terms, the more 'pure-breed' you get the more it will conform to it's breed's traits. For...

At what temp do chickens need help warming up?

What temps do you guys feel are ok for chickens without a heat source? I'm from up north, but now live in GA and I never really consider it too cold here. My pups don't even come in because they think it's more comfortable outside on the patio than in the house! But my coop is going to be very...

    Nesting boxes on door?

My first chicks are arriving this week and I'm finishing up plans for their coop right now. I'm converting a small (10x16ish) two-stall barn so the foundation is there. I want to be able to access the boxes without going in the coop so what do you guys think about the boxes being attached to the...

Countdown to receiving new chicks on oct 9th week

Getting a pretty big variety from Ideal. I'd been wanting chickens for awhile and kept getting shot down. Then I showed the boss of the house some pics and she had ordered 22 chicks the next day. 14 standards (about 7 varieties) and 8 silkies I believe. About to go upcycle some pallets into a...
