Where did you get your cabinets?
- We found a local guy who made cabinets and worked a good deal on maple cabinets. We got custom made cabinets stained to our color spec for a price less then buying from the big cabinet makers. We spent a lot of time finding someone so hopefully you can do...
Shade is not enough with this recent Texas heat. I lost a few birds 2 weeks ago and they were in the shade. I just bought a misting kit and need to pickup a timer and install it all. I think what got me was we had a day of 105 but with no breeze.
Everyday I get home the first thing I do is...
My EE did the exact same thing a while back. She laid an egg about every 1.5 days for 2 months after her first egg and then she just stopped for 2-3 weeks and then started up again. I can't promise that will happen to you but that was my experience. I had 14 hens and 1 rooster
Mine is 8ft and I am VERY glad I made it that tall. No bending and no smacking my head. The other goodie is that I put some "day time roosts" for my birds to play on during the day. My roo seems to like the higher perch to announce his presence (crow) during the day.
That is freak'n awesome. I am still laughing. You shouldn't need to worry about predators. A racoon will see that and either run scared or fall over laughing and lose his appetite.
About half of my BR's lay speckled eggs. The speckles range from lavender to red to dark purple. I kinda like think it's cool especially next to the EE's green eggs.
Can you not do an auto waterer? I got VERY tired of filling my 4 gallon for 15 birds and cleaning it when it started to get green. I bought one of those that is a red bowl with a spring loaded gadget that actuates on weight from the water. Works like a charm. It's super easy to take on and...
I live in Houston and built a coop with 3 sides and roof leaving one end open into the run. I have one neighbor who has a similar setup and my other neighbor has no coop, just a wide open barn they roost in for the night.
For my time in Houston (10ish years) it has dipped down into the 20's...
Any body know why eggs have the amount of sulfur they do? I did a search and didn't really come up with much. I did not think their diet contains that much sulfur (mine get Layena pellets, cracked corn, and oyster shell). Of course I am assuming the sulfur in the eggs is dependent on their...
I say keep the RV and that would be the sweetest crib ever for your chickens. Put some shag carpet in, curtains, and a disco ball. All the other chickens would be jealous. Don't forget the TV screens and sound system.
Seriously tho, very good idea. I thing it would make the best coop.
millebantam, LOVE your coop setup. The tree branch in the ground for roosting and the entire coop/run covered in netting is REALLY nice. I am jealous.
Also, I don't know if using shell (real oyster shell) is ok for the ground cover but I really like the idea. I can get loads of it cheap. I...
I would call Animal Control (Dog Catcher) anytime I would see one of those dogs in my yard and take a picture while I was at it to prove it. It's a tough call to make since it could start a Hatfield and McCoy feud but the safety of my family would be first and foremost.
I don't know the local...
mjdtexan, I wouldn't worry too much about costs on oyster shell when they are ready for it. I bought a $10 sack (not sure on weight but I would guess 20#) about 4 months ago and they have maybe gone thru 1/4 of it.
If you are ever in the Pearland area, drop me a PM before you head that way...
I keep a separate small feeder with an oyster shell / grit mixture. I'll see them occasionally take some out. My shells are thicker then store bought obviously but nothing out of the ordinary. Oddly enough my EE's take more of the mix than my BR's.
Really good idea and super cheap if you have scrap laying around like I do. We sometimes head out of town for 5+ days and my PVC feeder will usually hold about 5 days worth so I require a friend to top it off. I'm gonna build this one in the coming weeks. I'll let you know how it turns out.
Got 6 today and 76 so far this month from 14 layers. The little boogers finally started laying in late December. I'm pretty happy with this output. I'm pretty sure I have a few that are still not laying yet.
