My guess is that she is pulling out her own feathers. The area around her vent looks fine, but some of the remaining feathers look like they've been covered in oil. It's strange. It could be stress... I just had a fence installed aroung the chicken yard. Thanks for your comments!

I have 4 beautiful hens, all about 6 months old:). They have recently started scratching in the grass. Now I have about 30 little patches of dirt throughout my lawn. Is this typical? Will I ever be able to have a beautiful lawn and free range chickens?
