    Paleo Chickens

I was just talking with my hubby about a great pyraneese. We want piglets too but I worry I'd just be feeding them to the bobcats & cougars. Does your dog stay in the field all the time? How does that work? I can't imagine not having it in the house too, like a pet. Do you have a house dog too...

BROODER thread! Post pics of your brooders!

We used something similar, old retired wood fruit boxes the packing houses give away for free. My problem was it was too wide across and I couldn't catch the chicks to tame them. We are using a longer more narrow brooder now.

    Best Breeds for Egg Production

Thanks for the responses. After talking with some friends, they seem to get really good numbers of eggs from their non-sexlink breeds like Araucanas. Maybe the sexlink part doesn't matter that much?

    Best Breeds for Egg Production

I checked out their website. I know there is a lot of research that goes into food production, but I couldn't quite understand, are the Hy Line birds genetically modified or just a breed produced from different pure breeds? I have to say, their website freaked me out!

    Ideal Hatchery Chicks for Northwest!

I googled Ideal and found the hatchery out of Texas. Is this the same Ideal? We are an hour from Portland, OR and I am nervous about ordering mail order chickens because of the transit time. Haven't found any Northwest hatcheries.

    Best Breeds for Egg Production

After having many pretty and fun different breeds of chickens that we fed to the local predators . We've created a chicken bunker with a strong run and are focusing on kid friendly birds who are great egg layers. From my reading on the forum, I think we will go with Sex Link, in a variety of...

    Poop Scoop

So do you have sand under your roosts? how often do you scoop? I recently installed a "poop board" and redesigned the roost to be horizontal. I spread horse stall pellets on the poop board and haven't had to clean the coop our for months. No smell, and the coop floor stays clean! Guess I'm...

1 thing I wish I knew when I was starting out...

Bobcats can jump 12 feet. We blamed every other predator in the woods for the loss of our birds over the years, until we saw the tracks in the snow. There's very little information on bobcats and cougars as poultry predators, just a mention if that. Our run was 6-10 feet high with no top on it...

    chicken coop names...

We've spent 3 weekends making what we hope will be a bobcat/cougar/racoon -proof pen for our chickens. It is tall enough to be a flight cage for a giraffe, but that's not a very catchy name! So far I like... The Egg Plant (Patricew's) Chick Inn (can't remember the poster) and CluckingHen...

    Primal/paleo folks?

A great article to sum up the why behind paleo is at http://www.fourhourworkweek.com/blog/2010/09/19/paleo-diet-solution/ it is a guest post from Robb Wolf who is a bit of a guru in the field because of his educational background. Again, I like The Paleo Mom for recipies and more everyday...

    Paleo Chickens

We had good luck with the red wigglers just living in big manure piles (as high as I could pile them with the wheel barrow) in the winter. They went down and found the warmth they needed. We are in the Pacific NW so it's fairly mild. I'm sure they would love a wood stove in the winter :-) Thanks...

    Paleo Chickens

Worm farming is something I've read about and inadvertantly done for my chickens in the past. We had piles of horse manure with red wiggler worms in it. The chickens LOVED the worms. Don't know how you could make it sustainable, maybe multiple piles with fenced access? they make a huge mess...

    Paleo Chickens

Thanks for the responses! We are a paleo family and I am looking to get chickens again in spring. We've had problems with coyote and racoons in the past, they ate all our chickens and guinea fowl and even the wild turkeys our flock adopted. We are re-fencing about 3 acres of mixed open fir...
