Basically it is just a coop and run system, but instead of the run being bounded only on four sides, it is more like a maze. But the maze has no dead ends, all the paths connect at various points. If the width of the maze "corridor" is 5 feet then you pretty much have what I have. ;-)
Thanks for the advice, everyone.
The morning after I posted this I came out to open the coop "hatch" and they had already pushed it open themselves, lol. All were eating and drinking as it had been dawn for about 30 minutes already.
So last night I decided to experiment and not put the hatch...
Okay, finally got some pictures taken and uploaded...
First shot is my coop. It's last year's chicken tractor sitting atop a wall of strawbales, which are in turn sitting atop a floor of plywood held off the ground by some old fence posts laid flat...It is covered by a large tarp and there is...
My meaties are in a makeshift coop and having food and water in there is a pain in the neck (it was put together fast and on the cheap, thus not very efficient). It gets dark around 7:30 right now, and I open their coop at around 7:30 am, so that is 12 hours with no food or water. It occurred to...
Thank you.
I went ahead and moved the little guys in today as their brooder was needing a clean and moving them was easier than cleaning it, lol. It was their time anyway.
It went just fine. The only interest by the older ones was whenever a group of the younger ones would cluster together...
In case anyone is interested, I put the little guys in with the big guys today. It was a total non-event. They got along just fine, and all snuggled up in the coop this evening together. I guess they are too young to be worrying about pecking order.
I posted this in the Meaties forum but didn't get any replies so here I am...
I have a batch of 21Cornish X broilers that are 4 weeks old and have been outside in a coop and run system for two weeks now. I have another batch of 26 broilers that are two weeks old and it is time to move them...
It really does, SIMZ. I am really enjoying them. So much so that I'm going to be getting a flock of layers - after I build a proper coop. Who knew I chickens could be such a pleasure? ;)
Hi. I have 21 three week old Cornish Rock Giants and next week I will be adding another 26 birds to their coop and run when they graduate from their brooder ( so they will be two weeks old and the first batch will be four weeks old). I have never raised birds of mixed ages and was just wondering...
Last year we raised Cornish Rock Giants in a chicken tractor. It was 5x10 (2 ft tall) and held 25 birds at a time. I was not pleased with how much they dirtied the ground in the latter weeks, and the tractor could have been moved two or three times a day but it was a big job - it was heavy and I...
We are raising Cornish Giants. I sorta forgot to order them earlier in the summer and couldn't face a year without chicken in the freezer so I got two batches of 25 birds in September, staggered by two weeks (my brooder won't fit all of them at once). I'm also not using a tractor this year...
