21 eggs since last Friday! Now we're getting the surplus built up! I discovered the girls were cleaning out the nest boxes (scratching all the hay out) and laying on the floor of the coop. It was like an Easter egg hunt trying to find all the wooden eggs. I found several real eggs in the mix...
This is an interesting site that includes a chart of reasons for many issues with egg production, including egg size. You might want to look at it to see if there is anything you can adjust to help your chicken produce larger eggs. It seems she should be producing a medium size egg...
Congratulations!!!!! I've been getting more eggs too. Bad thing is, though that one of them has made it a habit to lay her eggs on the poop board!!!!!!! I found two on there today. The second was obviously a new layer based on the egg size and color, so I can forgive her, but the other egg was...
I got one a day for four days and then nothing (til 2 today but I have a sneaking suspicion that the egg on the board was done yesterday. It was too dark when I got home to check inside the coop then). I am now a believer that they do lay about an hour later each day until they skip a day. I've...
Leslie I am in NorCal too--outside of Sacramento. And I just found TWO eggs in the coop! I have a second layer now! It's about time! But, like the first layer, this second gal deposited her first egg on the poop board, and the other girls pecked at it before I discovered it. I hope that's not a...
What an awesome picture! Definitely this should be your jumping for joy pic when the eggs do finally arrive! I'm wondering if this breed just doesn't lay much in the winter time? Watching for your post!!!!
I think it depends on the breed. Some are more prolific layers than others and will continue laying through winter. What breed of chickens do you have?
Before you go so far as to cull her, what are the living conditions like? Is she getting adequate nutrition? there are several factors that may cause cannibalism. Look at this site for a few, and do some research about aggressive chickens...
Well, I sure hope she's just taking her time because she's been laying in a nest box now for quite some time. I really hope she won't become broody with her second egg ever!
I went out this morning to let the girls out and shortly after I heard one making quite a racket. I went out to listen and feed them. One stopped eating and urgently went into the coop, talking up a storm. I sat watching her a bit, and she was pacing, digging in the corner of the coop, found her...
I went out this morning to clean off the girls' poop board and I FOUND AN EGG!!! It was laying on the board in the corner, and had cracked on its way out, but IT'S AN EGG!!!!! I was so tickled I almost didn't know what to do with myself! Here it is, next to a "medium" egg from the Farmer's...
Still no eggs, but I'm noticing that the squatting behavior from the one hen is becoming more prevalent. The other day I reached down and she did a full squat. But now she's squatting whenever I come around. I gave her a good pet as she squat and she kept back up to me until she shuddered and...
I haven't seen anyone ask if they free range during the day. If so, have you checked around the yard? They may be laying somewhere that you're not aware of!
You can also float your eggs to see how fresh they are. If they lay flat on the bottom of a pan of water, they're fresh. If they stand up with one end touching the bottom of the pan, better use them soon because they're not as fresh. If they float, throw them out!
I just went out to do some chicken chores (scoop poop off the board, fill food, change water), and I reached down to touch one of the hens at my feet and I got a FULL ON OFFICIAL SQUAT!!!!! I was so excited I ran around the coop to check for eggs! LOL! I did manage to get 4 wooden eggs at the...
After reading through this thread of conversations, I went out to let the girls out of the coop and decided to do the squat test. Most of them squatted when I ran my hand down their backs! Usually they just try to bolt away, but they let me stroke them, and their bums went down toward the...
MB, your situation sounds like mine! I have 6 Delawares born at the end of July. We just unblocked their nest boxes last week because I've been hearing the egg songs, and their wattles and combs are getting red. They have been free ranging in the yard (a small acreage much like yours with a lot...
I lived in Lincoln, NE for 18 years; was raised in the central part of the state. I'm in CA now.
My Delawares are at the 20 week mark now. They've been making egg sounds out in the yard, so we've decided to keep them confined in the run/coop until they give me an egg. I keep watching! What is...
