Keeping a heated winter watering bucket clean ,,,

Thanks. I wonder if they just wouldn't perch on the lid and still poop through the hole. I've just had an idea to put the bucket inside of a wooden box with an opening on one vertical side at the same height as the top of the bucket. The opening could be square about 5" wide by 3" or 4" high...

Keeping a heated winter watering bucket clean ,,,

Hi I live in Canada and last year I used a light bulb in a ciment block under my metal watering container. That kept the water at a good temperature but the heat caused the water to get pretty funky and when the bulb burned out it was a real pain to change. This year, after looking at the...

Comment by 'eselick' in article 'summer/winter chicken nipple waterer'

Sorry about the questions I asked in the previous post about "acceptable" - I just saw the comment about the nipples unfreezing the same day they froze up. That would not be the case here. We had quite a few stretches where the temperature stayed very low for a few days at a time. So I need to...

Hi Techie I live in Canada just across the Vermont border, pretty cold this winter. I've read (I hope carefully) the comments and understand that with your design the nipples will freeze when it gets really cold. What I really don't understand is why this is "acceptable". How long do they stay...

    DIY Water Heater Question

Good point about breaking the vacuum. I hadn't thought of that! I think I'm going to go with putting the water can on top of a cinder block with a light bulb in one of the openings in the cinder block. Do you see any problems with this?

    DIY Water Heater Question

Hi Maizy's mom, The light bulb and cinder block combo seem like a great idea. BTW what have you done with the electric cord to keep your girls from pecking it?

    DIY Water Heater Question

I've only got 2 chickens and a metal watering can that probably holds around 2 gallons. I'm wondering about using a submersible aquarium water heater to keep the water from freezing. Here's the link on Amazon...

Winter coop in my open garage?

Hi Fred So If I understand, you're laying out a simple framework with 1x3's or something eqiuvalent and then nailing the OSB panels onto the furring. BTW I don't have any clue about the dust you're describing. I haven't noticed any dust where they are now. Elliot

Winter coop in my open garage?

Hi We've had a couple of chickens for many years but only during the summer. We've never figured out how to keep them in the winter since their current location is far from the house and it's too hard to get to when the snow comes as it usually does in Quebec. But my wife has sold her car and...
