I don't know sourland but at this point, I will try anything! They are GREAT brooders. They sit and sit and sit. And then, nothing. I came close once, but I found the eggs crushed and only one duckling was still breathing. I took it in and put it in the hatcher hoping it might survive but...
Okay, for YEARS now I've let my girls sit their nests. This year, I let Twix have her nest. She built a world-class nest and she had LOTS of eggs. We locked her down with food and water in a good size wire cage hoping that a little peace and quiet might help. She must've moved her nest 4...
Looking for Blue Swedish ducks as companions to my drake. He has one lady friend, but I thought it might be time to expand. We live in the Hodgenville, Kentucky area. Not opposed to ducklings or traveling, if need be.
Why does it tell me that I am not allowed to post a Classified Ad? What am I doing wrong? I just want to post a WANTED ad. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks!
Because the nights had turned cooler, and because I thought the eggs in the nest should've hatched LAST weekend (and we'd gone from 8 eggs to just two in the nest) I took the two remaining egg. I candled one and it was definitely a "no". The second one, was fairly dark with just a small air...
Thanks for your input! I've never noticed the girls fussing over the eggs. They're seen very docile but then I'm not with them 24/7. Maybe I will try to isolate one hen and the nest next time. It just totally bewilders me!
For two years now I have let my ducks sit their nests. At no time have they ever hatched any eggs. Last year, they got close. I actually found 3 shattered eggs with what looked like perfectly formed ducks in the pen. One was still breathing and I tried to hatch it, but it died hours later...
An update, after all this time. Rufus will be one year old next month. We had him neutered last month and he weighed 89 pounds. He's not a full-blooded Pyr like we were told, but he's still good. We did adopt a full-blooded Pyr in February and Roscoe is about 2 years old. He could care...
Oh!! I need to clarify!!! lol He is not in their HOUSE. He shares a 25 x 25 pen with them. The ducks have houses and I them out during the day and then at night, I put them back up. The ducks don't get to come out unless I'm home to keep an eye on things, but thankfully, he sleeps a lot...
Thanks!! He was the runt of the litter and he was very grey when we first got him. Not sure if he's really "full" Pyr like I was told, but as long as he does his job, he'll work out just fine. He's starting to lighten up a lot. The grey is more underneath now.
And he weighed in @ 25...
An update, not that anyone asked . . .lol. We bought what was supposed to be a full-blooded, eight week old, Pyrenees (Rufus) on August 8th. He's been in the pen with our buff ducks ever since. He's amaziing to watch and I would LOVE to get inside his head!! He has yet to kill or mangle any...
I did put the lab mix on a leash last Friday and took her in the pen with my buff ducks. The buffs get special treatment. They have their own fenced in yard with a pool and a house and they are put up every night. Our pond ducks are usually mallard mixes and we consider them pets. The buffs...
I've thought about collies but they're herding dogs and I really don't need a herder. I need a protector. The ducks don't wander far from the pond, but they come off the water at times and that seems to be the issue . . . especially at nights. Lately, though, I think whatever is getting my...
Has anyone ever used a Great Pyrenees to guard their ducks? We live on 6 acres in the country and we seem to have developed a predator problem, whether it's wildlife or local dogs, I'm not sure. We have dogs but they are more barkers than protectors and I've decided to look into Livestock...
That was the first thing that entered my mind. I have never seen males on top of each other on top of a female! And this one was not full grown at 10-12 weeks old, I'm sure. Thank you all for your comments. It's funny how I humanized my ducks . .. and I was very disappointed with their...
I don't consider that harsh especially when I know you are dealing with limited information. We had the young ducks in a pen next to the pond. The other ducks could actually, and often did, swim over and associate with the younger ducks. Never saw a problem. We thought coyotes or dogs had...
Here's the story: We have had 5 young ducks (about 12 weeks) old in a pen by our pond for 2 weeks now. There are 7 adult ducks on the pond that are not in a pen. This morning, when I went down to feed the young ducks, all 5 were gone. One was dead at the scene, but the others were just...
Fingers crossed! I was worried about infection but we seem to have dodged that bullet. I'm hoping she can still function on the pond and in the flock, protect herself, etc. Can't have her looking too much of a tasty invitation to predators!!
I've been doing some searching for books or...
