Question: Hs anyone mixed chicks from different hatches? I have 2 from the New Year's Day hatch and 14 from Jan 27th that I would like to put in the same pen, 4 foot by 5 foot in size with a couple of feed and heat sources.
I have rose comb RIR'S in the incubator, 29 eggs looking viable. Hatch day is Saturday, wish us luck! This is our first year trying to hatch, only got 2 chicks from our first hatch, so hoping for better results this time!
We candled our eggs tonight. Pulled out 11 and left in 29. They are heritage Rhode Islans Reds. My air cells seemed smaller than the picture above, not sure what that could mean? We go into lockdown tomorrow evening.
Just found this thread. My daughter has rose comb RIR's and we are trying to hatch some. We got 4 chicks in the New Year's Day hatch, and have 45 eggs set yesterday. Our first year hatching chicks....
We set 45 rose comb Rhode Island reds yesterday. Hoping for better success than I had in the NYD hatch! We have 4 chicks out of 45, but I learned I had them upside down in the turner.
2 chicks hatched overnight, and I have 1 in the brooder. 1 more has pipped and is working on hatching. The one in the brooder had a huge piece of shell stuck on his back and he wasn't drying off, so we helped get the shell off and put him in the brooder.
We have our first pip and are still hearing cheeping. Set 45 eggs, pulled 11 on about day 15. We saved eggs for about 3 weeks, so some were not fertile.
I thought mine were goners, as we had to set early in the day, 7:00 am, and I still had nothing happening. So I tried someone's suggestion to tap the bator, and we all could hear cheep, cheep, cheep! More patience I guess, better get the brooder ready!:)
