    mealworms!

Set-up sounds alright gagroundhog. All I can think of is that they would be burying themselves a lot to get away from the light. Jacqui

    Mealworm farming

I don't know how large your set-up is, but I found DE (diatomaceous earth) to be a really big help around containers and on the floor. Unfortunately, you can't put it in with the mealworms. However, it is totally non toxic, but very fine, so you have to be careful about breathing it in. I tried...

    Mealworm farming

Hi, I bought a shipping container to house my mealworms. To my horror, they started looking sick and dying. Turns out they had mould mite, diagnosed by an entomologist. She said the mite would have come in with my bran substate, however I've figured out since that they were already in the...

    Mealworm farming

Hi, Regarding the control of grain pests, would you have a site reference, especially concerning the heating of substrate (50-55deg.for 15 mins)? I have had an unbelievable amount of mould seeking mites breeding in a shipping container for my mealworms...devastating. The impression I got from an...

    Mealworm farming

I assume the pros use a sieve (round caterers sieve with 4" high straight stainless steel walls and fine mesh in the bottom) Apparently they move the sieve, say weekly, to a new tray of substrate, thereby having trays with a consistent size of worm. Can't send a pic as I failed trying this...

    Mealworm farming

Hi all, I would like to master the use of a sieve, (containing the beetles),in order to have a consistent worm size. Could anyone advise me as to how often the sieve is moved to a new box and the use of a water source (carrot) for the beetle? If the beetles lay eggs on the carrot, could they...

    mealworm larvae appearance

I'm wondering if anyone can tell me how to pick the difference in appearance of the worms prior to molting as opposed to pupating? Anything "turning", like very still, forming a "C" shape, skin a lighter colour, etc, I was putting into a tray expecting to eventually see pupae, then beetles...

    mealworms twitching

Has anyone seen mealworms that roll around constantly, like twitching, then form a letter C shape (all sizes) and I think eventually die? Have seen the odd one here and there, but never a whole tray like I had recently. TIA Jacqui

    mealworms

Probably thousands, in various stages of development Some trays are experimental such as worms turning brown, to see how many survive. Very large worms interbreeding to see if I can create a larger worm. A "still" worm tray, to learn how to tell if they are pupating or molting. Sounds like an...

    mealworms

thanks Charlie, I've gained a couple of interesting facts from your post with regard to timing and where the eggs are laid and I meant to thank Pxyis re the substrate tip. How can you find/see the eggs? Have been doing this now for a couple of years and only found a few of them once on a paper...

    mealworms!

I've got a 90watt reptile "cable". No thermostat as they are pricey, so when it warms up during the day (sub-tropical here), I turn it off.
