Yep, we have increasing flock numbers of red-fronteded green Amazons flying overhead every morning & back the other direction every evening. Have no idea where they go or roost... we just know we're in their flight pattern. I think our neighborhood crows keep the Amazons from settling down in...
Belt Hatchery I believe supplies your local feed stores as they do our feed store & their breed availability is very limited compared to the Midwest's mega-hatcheries selections.
Welsummers have Light Brown Leghorn in them if you ever come across Wellies, plus they are auto-sexed at hatch. The...
Did the veterinarian guess Ollie's age? Cats live way longer than chickens or dogs. For yrs my DS/DIL's kitty lived to 18 even w/ having to have insulin injections twice a day for her last 6 years of life. Cats are amazing creatures.
I was going to get a couple Light Brown Legs & Exchequers after getting my White Leg & Buff Legs but had to rehome all our Legs before I could get more. I also wanted Welsummers but never had the right opportunity. That's ok... God knew best👌 what we actually wound up with (less troublesome...
Too little too late for some of us BY keepers who have already lost sweeties to layer issues.
Our sweet Mini who suffered laying issues from her 1st egg as a pullet to her very last egg w/ bleeding ovarian tumor at 6-1/2 yrs
If it was ever a possibility we would've gladly opted a chicken...
We used vaseline once on our White Leghorn & no denying it was effective; however, it greased up some of her white feathers that stained her feathers when she took a dustbath & she looked sadly dingy till her next moult. The vet recommended Vit E which is absorbed into the skin & doesn't leave a...
Living on a farm... all pets & farm livestock are stressful to care for... so are the farm orchards & gardens ~ even though less stressful but still worrisome.
Can't figure why some bird species have such long lifespans like parrots & swans while other birds are lucky to make it to a year? Not...
There was once a minimum of over 200 varieties of chickens we would've liked to have owned, but now that we're old, these 4 surviving Silkies will be our last flock... DH has health issues & I am feeling my old age/ handicaps.
I don't disagree about implant issues... only that it seems to be a rare practice in the USA.
I've had 3 Leghorns ~ 2 from Dan Honour's developing Buff line & 1 White ~ & absolutely loved them. They could be aloof as chicks & adults but do interact a bit w/ humans in spite of their mostly...
TeeHee! That's a lot of new leftovers plus new chicks you'll be getting... but good to prepare for any losses you might have from your present tribe (sad, but it happens as we all know too well).
I don't think you need to worry about Fayoumi egg colors so much as to wonder where they will lay...
Implants seem to be for poultry industry use & not widely recommended from what I read on the internet. My thinking is if a hen gets to the point of needing an implant for health reasons, she's not very hardy to begin with. Some sweeties just haven't been born w/ the hardiness of their peers.
The Australorp pics were all from Australorp websites... probably cross-breeding to create new colors loses some of the main features of the true black 'Lorps.
TY for your 'Lorp pics... I never was able to get any... never the right opportunity for me plus I was never sure an all-black heavier...
