I have 30 chickens total, 2 of whom are roosters. I had always "heard" that this was a good ratio of hens to roosters. My roosters are one and a half years old. What's the deal?
Many of my hens have a spot where their tail meets their back where the feathers are missing. Some are worse than others. Poor Shirley (pictured here) is the worst. Is this molting or are my roosters doing this to them??
Here is another hen, Charlotte:
Another funny thing is that now my other Marans has decided this new nest box pair is THE place to lay, and you can often catch the two chickens side by side in those two boxes, laying their happy dark Marans eggs.
Hi there!! Welcome to chicken-hood! It's so much fun :) I started out thinking I would just have 3 or 4 and now I have 34! Make sure you join the Tallahassee backyard poultry group on fb. There's much to be learned... and swaps and such. It's great.
Thanks!
Yes, she's definitely at the bottom of the pecking order along with our one silkie and an Australorp. We had 3 nest boxes for the 12-13 currently laying hens. We just built two more, lower to the ground and on a different wall. I think I agree with you. Perhaps she felt intimidated by...
Congrats to you too! Victory at figuring out the right set-up! For us, I don't think lighting is the problem since we live in sunny old Florida and the chickens have an open-air coop with skylights in the roof. ;-)
She laid an egg! She laid an egg!
Seriously. It was her first one and very obviously because it was small. The interesting part is that we just built a new set of nest boxes on a different wall of the coop area to add to the ones we had. She was immediately interested in them and spent two...
I'm so sure, I would even bet money on it. I study my chickens behaviors very carefully. I work from home so I spend many days sitting out in our chickens area with my laptop working and I watch them. not only that but I only have two Marans chickens and their eggs are unlike any of my other...
My Blue Copper Marans is 13 months old and has never produced an egg. She is at the bottom of the pecking order of about 20. She also seems to be kind of dumb and goofy compared to the others. Is it a Marans thing? (I only have one other and she is normal.) Is any of this related? Will she EVER...
I agree with this. For your size, (smaller than mine, but too big for shavings!) you should look into getting sand. And possibly a cover. We helped a friend put in a covered run around their small coop that was about that size. We used clear plastic roofing (think: wavy looking greenhouse...
My run is an area that includes trees, shrubs, leaves, dirt, etc. and functions just fine without adding anything to it. It's fairly large, but trying to cover it with shavings or any other foreign material would become unmanageable. What is the size of the run? Do you really need shavings?
I didn't think I would be wanting breed her. Never crossed my mind I guess. She is more of a pet who should provide some eggs for us to eat one day (fingers crossed!). I was mostly curious if the breed is known for popping up cross beaked.
I have two RIR's that lay every day along with my newly laying Australorp and their eggs are noticeably darker in shell color than the Australorp's. Perhaps that can help? I know know individuals vary...
