is there any domestic bird that eats squash bugs? My chickens won't touch them. I'm curious if ducks or guineas eat them. Does anyone know? I have given up growing squash because of these blasted bugs!!! Thanks! Wendy
I have a source for chicks from black sex-link hens & barred rock rooster -- am I right that I can't tell the chick's sex because they are a hybrid? Other than not being able to sex the chicks, this seems like a good cross to me -- any thoughts?
Thanks, Wendy
Wow, I've had a lot of embarrassing moments....let's see....
I was at work, telling a client (Gary) that my boss had gone to a nearby golf resort for the weekend. Gary asked "Did he take his clothes with him?" and I said sarcastically "well, no, Gary, he went naked!" He looked at me very...
The squat isn't as much "getting ready to lay" as it is "getting ready to BE laid" If you push down on the hen's back, she will squat -- it mimics being serviced by the rooster. Not all hens will do this, but without a rooster, a couple of mine do. Isn't it fun what you learn here?

They are GREAT! I'd buy one too, so let us know. Suggestion: add a piece of leather lacing for a tail -- would that make it more "mousey"?
Also, about the boxes: you used to be able to get Priority boxes and turn them inside out. But now they are printed on the inside so that doesn't...
I know people have mixed feelings about crows, but my hubby thinks they are the coolest, smartest birds, so he started feeding them. He started by walking out on the deck, throwing out some grain, and calling "CROW-CROW!" whenever he saw them nearby. It didn't take long for them to figure it...
Our girls LOVE treats -- when we come back from town, they look for the "doggie bag", and we better have one!!! Favorites: french fries, bread, grapes, and cooked spagetti noodles -- but they will eat anything!!!

If you want your hens to have bald heads & backs, and if you want to be woken up VERY EARLY (as in still dark) 7 days a week, and if you want to have to enter the chicken yard with a baseball bat for protection, and if you want to use so many bandages you are thinking about buying stock in...
Well, since you asked, I don't care for your avatar -- reminds me too much of defomities, which are not funny in people or animals. I would never have said anything, but since you asked...

I live in Tennessee, and we have bobcats. We've never had any trouble with our chickens (knock knock), but they are in a REALLY strong fence, and not allowed to free-range due to all the predators. The problem we have is with our CATS. Bobcats carry a disease called "cytauxzoonosis" or...
I have another photo of a day-old chick standing in a frying pan on the stove (sick sense of humor, I know). We named our hobby farm "Wildwood", and I have a crazy dream of publishing a calendar with these chick pictures, and calling it the "Chicks Of Wildwood". I figure most of my sales will...
Several of you have asked about my avatar -- this little chick did not have a medical condition; nor was he injured (except for a blow to his pride, perhaps!). I fashioned the diaper out of a Kleenex & photographed him for a baby shower invitation. It was a huge hit, and the new mom has a...
When my husband and I moved to a farm & started raising our own meat, I didn't think I could kill an animal. I had a long talk with myself and said "OK, you can either be a hypocrite & buy your meat in the nicely wrapped packages at the supermarket or be a vegetarian--because if you can't...
I don't know about the homeless person -- could be the cause; could be coincidence.
But it's just SAD that we have to live like this. We've been broken into twice, and now have to live with an alarm system on the house, and padlocks on all the barns. It was an adjustment, but the peace of...
Never JUMP at getting an animal unless you are really ready for it.
Years ago, I bought a young goat, brought it home, and was so excited -- I put it in our fenced backyard, with a doghouse for a shelter, and the next morning it was GONE & we never found it.
LESSON LEARNED: we didn't have...
How do I view the photos??? I clicked on the link, but no photos showed up. I even signed on with Flickr, but still don't see the pictures. What am I missing???
I've always wanted to learn pysanky, so am excited to see examples!
Thanks

Oh, boy, do we feed wild birds!! We live in middle Tennessee, and I have lost count of the number of species we have on our farm.
The "regulars" at the feeders are jays, cardinals, titmice, chicadees, downy & redbellied woodpeckers, hummingbirds, purple finches, goldfinches. In addition, we...
We have BR hens that are 4 years old. We bought new chicks & raised them to replace the old girls (so I thought), but now my husband can't part with the old girls. Something about "knowing them for 4 years" and "not wanting them to go to an inferior home".....he is so soft-hearted. But...
I raised baby chicks in the same henhouse as the old girls -- but I sectioned off part of it with chickenwire. When the babies were big enough to start venturing outside, I cut & folded back a small piece of the wire (like you'd make a creep feeder). The babies learned VERY QUICKLY to use that...
