Thanks - I feel a little better, but this hen has been laying for about 4 months now - and it was more than just a smear on both the egg and the hen herself. Is this indicative of any kind of disease I need to worry about?
Help, We have a flock of 9 laying hens, and one of our white plymouth rock's gave us an egg that had blood on it. (egg completely in-tact) When we examined her, she had blood on her as well, and the only other indication that she's not at 100% is that her comb is slightly flopped over. Is this...
Thanks for the post - unfortunately we don't have a rabbit cage to sequester our 2 broody hens in, so we just waited it out. Our blue cochin stayed broody for nearly a month and our RIR for about 2 weeks. We tried everything from keeping the broodies separate from the flock to doing the hen...
So we have 3 laying hens: a Blue Cochin, a RIR and a Wyandotte. The RIR lays every day, the Wyandotte about 5 days a week, and the Blue Cochin will lay 5 days in a row, take 2 or 3 days off then lay 4 in a row, etc. In the last 3 days our Blue Cochin has gone broody, oddly enough though she...
Hi there!
I have 6 9 week old chicks, 3 Buff Orpingtons and 3 Australorps. I also have 3 pullet/nearly hens - a RI Red, a Wyandotte and a Blue Cochin. We live where it's pretty warm, so we moved our chicks in their "brooder" outdoors about 2 weeks ago, putting it inside the chicken run so the...
OH MY - I missed the second page of posts with the current photos. I was looking at the photos as a chick. Yes, this is definitely too small to be a B.O.!
We got 3 chicks that are called Buff Orpingtons, and judging by the size of them, I'm guessing that to be accurate. Ours looked pretty much like your does about 2 weeks ago, except we have yellow legs. Maybe a mix?
We are fairly new to raising backyard poultry. We started last summer when a neighbor gave us a few "extra" bantams. We had a couple of incidents, lost one to disease, a couple flew out and got lost to the dogs, then we had a massive midday raccoon massacre which brought our flock down to 3. Out...
Hi there,
My name is LeAnn, and my nearly 9 year old son, Samuel is raising our backyard chickens, in part for the fun, but also as a 4H project. We started by inheriting chickens from a neighbor who found them to be too much work (really??) and we just this past week decided to add to our...
