Ok, I need some help from you Blue JG breeders out there. Last year I managed to get 3 nice Blue pullets that grew into a trio of sweet hens. I always intended to breed them, but couldn't find a Roo to do the job. About a month ago I got lucky on Facebook and found someone selling 5 6 month...
Thanks, chooks4life for the Turkey Primer. I am really interested in the Garlic info. How much and how often do you give the Garlic? Does it work with chickens, too? How about ducks? Any advice on probiotics for Turkeys? I am medicating a Tom white broad-breasted for respiratory issues and...
Yep! this is my first go round with an incubator. I got 6 Red Bourbon Turkey eggs from my neighbor unexpectedly a week ago. I had only bought an incubator as a backup in case any of my broody hens quit on me, so the 'bator was still in the box! I had to figure it out fast!! So, I candled them...
I have a hen that was also attacked by a dog. The picture you posted looked like the identical wound! I could see her wing bones and everything. I figured she was a goner for sure and since I couldn't even find enough skin to sew together, I just basted her with Bu-Kot , put her in a small...
So, I opened up the brooder door to let Nellie the broody hen out this morning for her daily walk/dustbath and I saw this egg in the nest...
The outer hard shell has "flaked off" like off a hard boiled egg that has been cracked all over. The Inner membrane feels like dried latex paint..pliable...
Our High school Biology/Zoology/FFA Advisor/Teacher does something similar. One of the major projects of her curriculum is having the kids raise 2 sets of broiler chickens from chick to slaughter. The school has a small building just for this purpose. The kids even compete (gasp!) to see...
Screech the Serama hatched out 5 little ones so far...this was the only pic I could get. Screech is VERY protective! This is #3 very shortly after hatching. Hatched May 7 at around 2:30 pm
Ok, my first year with broody hens and it seems as if every female in the place wants to set eggs. I had a black maran set and hatch 6 eggs out of 13 a month ago. The six chicks are doing great. there were no problems with the maran's hatch, it was all "textbook". But now, I have 4 other...
Congrats, cnotche!! It is like a little miracle, isn't it? You know, of course, that you are now hopelessly hooked and can never go back to an eggless existence, right?!! Bwahahahah!!
OKay, stupidest thing that I've heard about chickens..."They are loud, smelly, vicious creatures. And DUMB, too! Who in the world would want to keep them?!"
Yeah, that was me two years and 90 chickens ago!!
I have an Old English hen that trained herself not to go on people. "Duncan" loves to fly up on your shoulder or hang out in your lap, but when she needs to go, she hops down, does her business and goes right back up. The trick is to let her down when she wants and don't try to keep her...my...
Just wanted to tell someone...My broody Copper Maran, Giselle, has hatched 5 chicks out of 10 eggs over the last couple of days! This is my first successful broody hatch and it is so exciting!! Not sure if this is her first time because I bought her at an auction a few months ago...
I once used this method on a kitten who had been attacked by a dog. It is not clean and the poor kitty struggled the whole time. Plus, the exhaust gases are hot and the smell of burning cat fur is not pleasant. I can't imagine doing this to a pet chicken. I would never use this method again.
I hated chickens...at least that's what I thought! got our first dozen from a relative who could no longer take care of the 3 month old layers. NO idea how to keep them. A couple of months and a lot of fast learning later, I was watching and listening to them peacefully clucking in their...
What a great couple of faces! What is that they're in? Makes me want a Silky hen! One of the Copper Marans I bought at a farm auction went broody over 13 eggs about 18 days ago and we are waiting breathlessly for the hatch! but, there is a slight problem...i know that the eggs are not all at...
Happy to be of help! the chicks are 3 weeks old now and are doing great...and outgrowing the brooders quickly!! The previously unidentified ones turned out to be Barred Rocks, White Rock, Leghorn and Black Jersey Giant. also, a wheaten Easter Egger. One can never have enough Easter Eggers...
