    Any other hawaiians out there?

I agree with Joan. Organic is great, but a lot more expensive and not always there. I feed layer pellets, 3 way scratch, and for a treat, HI Game Bird mix. It has a lot of big seeds that they love fighting over. The best bargain is broken bags when you can find them at 50% off. Usually only...

    Any other hawaiians out there?

Hi, Diane! Iʻm not sure if your note was directed to me, but let me chime in anyways. As my full-time farmer god-father taught me, chickens are living garbage disposals. If you can eat it, they probably can also. However, certain foods arenʻt healthy for them. I try to avoid anything with...

    Any other hawaiians out there?

Yeah, but youʻve got to see Joanʻs coop. Its the Taj Mahal of chicken houses! Please post some pictures so we all can see what "Moving on Up to the Eastside" really means in the chicken world. Chuck

    Any other hawaiians out there?

Aloha! Silkie newbie girl is a good egg, lives Hilo side and has a couple of silkies too. Sheʻs an artist and a nice person to know. Iʻm all the way up in Hawi, so I donʻt get to Hilo except two or three times a month. I have a couple of dozen ameraucana hens laying those funky blue eggs and...

We're attaining previously unimagined levels of stinkiness ;)

Quote: My wife has been feeding them garden waste. They love it, but the droppings have become distinctly juicy, to be delicate. The money saved on feed is being spent on additional shavings to keep things under control. Oh well!

    Rigor mortis and freezing chickens

Quote: And here Iʻve been blaming the tough meat on the fact that Iʻve been butchering excess cockerels! I did know to chill them in ice water (no salt or sugar), but I only did it for an hour and then popped them in the oven for dinner.

    Gamecock Feed

People here mainly keep them as pets. Their ethnic heritage is mainly Western Pacific and they like to have oriental fowl. I plan on selling them as trios at 6 months. How does "Gamebird Grower" vary from regular Broiler Grower? Thanks for your help.

    Gamecock Feed

I have a couple of dozen oriental gamecocks ready to come out of the brooder. So far Iʻve been feeding broiler starter mixed with millet seed and chick grit. Theyʻve grown fast and appear healthy. The question is about something called "Hawaiian Gamecock Feed"? It looks like a cross...

    Any other hawaiians out there?

I got choke orientals ready to come out of the brooder. O-shamo, malay, thai, & saipan. But when do you start feeding them Hawaiian Gamecock mix? Anybody know? Iʻve been using broiler starter mixed with millet seed & chick grit so far. They grow fast and peep like crazy! Already a couple...

The Annoyance of Selling Birds: Cheap People

Just to show how crazy people are, I just conducted a Farm Auction to raise money for a drug education program locally. Most of the chicks I sold went for $5 - $7. However, the Silver Wyandotteʻs got into a bidding war and we ended up getting $80 for just four of our week old chicks. I...

When can the chicks "graduate" from paper towel to the pine shavings??

I tried the paper towel trick, but gave up when they kept trying to get under it. The past three broods I ordered, I put them straight on to shavings with no problems. The real difficulty if if they are on a slick surface like newspaper. That is said to cause leg development problems.

Chicks and Hens do I separate?

I used to have a boss who would talk about employees working out their "pecking order". I think he must have raised chickens prior to going into law. From what Iʻve read so far, it may go smoothly, or there may be feathered shed, but they have to do it on their own. My laying flock seems...

Chicks and Hens do I separate?

Quote: Good memory, Lollipop! The shamos are gong to remain in the brooder a few weeks longer. Being hard feathered, they still need more time. But the EEʻs are huge - softball size and fully feathered. They are becoming unmanageable being so tightly packed. Standing still in a 4ʻ x 4ʻ...

    Newbie w/Heat Lamp Questions...

Quote: I donʻt know what you did wrong, but almost every feed store hangs a portable fixture with a 250 watt bulb on a water trough for their chicks. But again, as I said earlier, get a thermometer and do a couple of dry run tests at different times of day and at night too. My brooder is 48"...

    Who waves to other drivers?

I think the funniest thing is that the most waves take place on the way to and from the solid waste transfer station. (Which is a ten dollar term for dump.) Maybe its the shared experience, but I can almost always count on everyone waiving on that road. Or maybe its because only locals are...

    Tractor Supply federal tracking!?

Delʻs in the Northwest & Hawaii are a division of TSC and buys from Ideal also. They are requiring the 6 minimum and a physical address for the buyer. Ideal did the same thing to me on a direct order. Even though they ship to my PO Box and my Visa is billed to that PO Box, they insisted that...

Egyptian Fayoumi going broody...will she be a good mom?

    How long under heat?

Pull the light higher every week to drop the temps about 5 degrees per week with 95 degrees being your starting point. When you get it down to the ambient, average daytime temp, then just leave the heat on at night until they are fully feathered or until the nights are warm enough for you to...
