Is it safe to eat a chicken that a hawk killed?

Since it was a fresh kill, I would say it would be fine to eat as long as its thourougly cooked (160deg). Like stated before, seems like a waste not to.

Anyone know how long it'll be till a hen lays again...

Months!!! Cripes!!! that sucks! Turns out the original hen (her name is "fried") is getting more confident.....but it might be to the expense of the new hen ("mable"). Now shes started to peck at her and essentially bully her. I also switched back to the 16% layer feed today so we'll see how...

    What is it?

As a Lesser Prairie Chicken research technician - usually when there are only feathers left (no carcass) - it was another bird that got it.

Anyone know how long it'll be till a hen lays again...

So 2.5 weeks ago a red fox chewed its way into my chicken coop and snagged one of my two hens. The surviving hen was obviously freeeeaaakked out, and in an effort to give her some company we got another hen 3 days ago. Well the new hen is obviously freaked out from being relocated as well. Kleetrucking - I'm sure your right, I just guess I was really surprised they picked up on everything else so quickly, but not this. Hennyville - Thanks for the help! Looks like I'll have to find out what treat they go crazy for and use that (never would have thought watermelon was the ticket!)

    "Old" hens learning new tricks?

So...I've done a forum search and it seems as though all of the "chickens using ladders" questions/comments are geared for young chickens that are in large coops and dont mind being held/handled. So heres the background story: I have zero experience with chickens but 2 days ago I bought 2...

    First timer from Kansas!

Hey thanks for the warm welcomes! ........and yes......those are their permanent names . Just for the record I voted for "old lady" names like Ethyl and Gertrude but my wife wasnt nearly as excited as I was about my new "adventure" so I let her do the naming.

    First timer from Kansas!

So I've always wanted to keep my own chickens and have finally done it! I was able to build an Aframe chicken tractor out of all recycled/scrap materials (minus the chicken wire). I also built my own feeder, and am in the process of building my own waterer. This last Sunday (2/24/13) I bought...
