I see, that's too bad.
Yes, I was meaning the Light Brown variety. I've read that they're still flighty, but not quite as neurotic as the White strain. That may or may not be true. I'd do standards, if I decided to add a couple of hens. Like you with your ducks, I feel sort of cursed on the...
I'm sorry to hear that. D: Maybe you just had a streak of bad luck. My last pair of Muscovys were killed by a coyote. I had raised the drake from a tiny duckling and had him for over two years. I was pretty torn up about it. These new pairs have been just fine, so far. Maybe you could try again...
Late Bloomer is doing well, I'm happy to say. Still behind his siblings, but improving daily. As of this afternoon, he was only sitting down to catch his breath every 10 minutes or so, and was standing while idle instead of sitting. He actively seeks food and water on his own, as well. Hopefully...
Yeah, Mama took the other ducklings back into the coop earlier, so I shut her in so I could let the drakes and chickens out. Looks like they're all snuggling together under Mama. :D Thank you so much for helping me!
Thank you! Mama will NOT let me anywhere near her ducklings, so I took the plunge and stuck the late bloomer in the coop while the others were running around. Mama definitely knew the little one was different, but after eyeballing it and nudging it a bit she accepted the duckling. Late bloomer...
Thank you for the advice! I had considered that, but I don't know if I would be able to intervene fast enough if she grabbed it up and thrashed it. I've grown attached to it, haha, and do not want it to die. I can raise it myself, but I would prefer it to grow up with it's mother and siblings.
My Muscovy hen laid 12 eggs and hatched out 10 ducklings on Thursday. I let mama and ducklings out to explore this morning and went to discard the two unhatched eggs, and one was peeping and had a leg sticking out. Duckling was trying to emerge from the side of the egg instead of the bottom and...
Whew, thank goodness. I'm glad that it's not a painful process, though I'm sure the hen will be upset with me for a while afterward. That's a wonderful diagram and info. Thank you very much for all of your help! :D
I hate the idea of taking away her natural defense and ability to fly, but you're probably right. I would be more upset if she flew off and got herself killed. Every time someone mentions clipping wings, they mention that blood stop powder. Yikes, do the wings really need to be clipped to the...
Thank you very much! It's hard for me to find out terribly much about Muscovys, especially something specific like that. That sounds like a great approach. Our drake is very laid back and enjoys mingling and foraging with our chicken flock, but you never know how an animal will react when the...
Hi there, I apologize if this question has already been answered elsewhere, but I couldn't seem to find it. I've just joined, though I have lurked this website constantly for advice and opinions all through my first experience with my very own first flock.
I have a Muscovy drake who is a...
