    Appenzeller Barthuhner Thread!

Here are some pics from our Barthuhner flock. The Rooster below is just a few months old. He is part of a second generation flock we have growing out. The hen below is one of our older hens from greenfire that have been laying about a year now.

What ^ said x 3 Yes we have both breeds here on our farm and the one on the right is the bielefelder and the left is the legbar.

omega hills farm or greenfire farms?

Yes rhodebars and bielefelders look similar. The bielefelder is a bit larger and therefore proves to be a better meat breed. We have a nice flock of rhodebars coming along and should have eggs and chicks available later this summer. Once our rhodebar flock has fully grown out we will be able...

omega hills farm or greenfire farms?

We actually don't ever ship out day olds. We age our chicks at least one week and two weeks in the colder weather. Right now I would age them two weeks for NY. In fact, we had a batch of two week old barthuhners go out to NY today. Yes we do hatch out many breeds at the same time. We...

omega hills farm or greenfire farms?

Sorry for the late reply. I just now saw your question for me. We will ship as few as three chicks at a time. We prefer to ship at least six for warmth especially this time of year. When we do ship smaller amounts we make sure the chicks are aged at least two weeks. This gives them time to...

Every chick we have hatched appears to be an exact clone of the others. I am not aware of any standards set up for the breed yet. The cream legbars have been around for a bit longer in the US so they have a bigger following. Therefore, there are clubs and groups working on improving the breed...

omega hills farm or greenfire farms?

^ This 100%. I had intended on mentioning your facilities but forgot to. Housing and spaces are the number one issue for most of us. If we had a 1000 coops and runs guess what?? We would all have 1000 different breeds/projects going. Most of the time we are limited by our available space...

omega hills farm or greenfire farms?

Hi cuti, Thanks for asking about us and our chickens. You mentioned bielefelders and they are a good choice for a dual purpose breed with the added benefit of being auto sexing. That will help when you start to grow your flock of laying hens. We were one of the first farms to receive a...

Believe it or not we have been shipping more Bielefelders chicks and eggs the past 2 months to WA than anywhere else. I don't know what's up with the peeps up there but they want their Bielefelders!! Must be something in the water.

Hi DeannaA, Our bielefelders are one of our most vigorous breeds. Of the hundreds we have hatched out I cannot remember loosing a single chick. I have not heard of anyone else loosing chicks either. Can you give some more info? Where are the housed? How many? Are they mixed with any...

We finally got our brooder cam back up and running today. At the moment there are 12 bielefelder chicks in there. http://omegahillsfarm.com/brooder-cam/ 4 are about 10 days old and the rest are a couple of days old. We have 50-60 (I lost count) bielefelder eggs in our incubator so within...

I've been curious about that guy as well. As far as I know, I have some of the oldest bielefelders out there and mine have been laying for about a month. Not saying mine are the oldest. I know EP got the first ones from GFF but mine were a just a couple of months behind his. That guy has...

Just had our first bielefelder hatch this week. So far 5 out of 5 have hatched. Looks like 3 Roos and 2 Hens. I'll try and post pics tomorrow when they leave the hatcher and go into the brooder. Will have another batch hatching next weekend. Man, I need a bigger incubator :D

I agree I would keep at least 2 of the roosters. Personally I would keep all 3 but hey that's just me. Every bielefelder I have is nearly identical to the next. The color/patterns are the exact same. For everyone that has asked about age of laying, I have 2 different groups of bielefelders...

    Augsburger Thread!

We just received a batch of day old chicks and did not see a thread dedicated to this particular breed. They are new to the US and there is very little info or pics of them on the net. We don't have any adult pics yet but the adult rooster has a bright red double "buttercup" comb that is quite...

Wow JR is a pretty little guy. He will figure things out very shortly. That stinks about your ratio of pullets to roos. Our last batch of 6 came in at 5:1. I guess we were lucky. the pullets are 4 splash and 1 blue and then one black roo. They are currently in our brooder "Big Momma" and...

Ha! At first glance I was trying to figure out what the black looking crest was on your Roos head. Seriously it looks like he is wearing a hat or something. After closer inspection and zooming up on the iPad I could tell its another chicken in the background. Congrats on the approaching egg...
