What to do with the pecking hen?

All of mine are the same age. And yes they have injuries. I have them under a red brooding lamp at night and during the day they go out in the open pen

What to do with the pecking hen?

I have several chicks that are getting pecked pretty bad by one of my RIR chicks. Its definitely a hen. Will isolation cure the problem or is it best just to part ways with her and avoid the problem continuing?

    Leg Bands

I know some people even use color zip ties if they aren't running any kind of a major operation. Just don't winch them down all the way and leave a little room for growth! You can usually buy multi colored packs by the 100's at Walmart for less than 5 bucks

    Leg Bands

The colored ones are easier to read, unless u have them on for a long time or ur birds are in a place where they can get into mud. A muddy band is a muddy band, so metal or plastic is irrelevant. I think the reason I like them is two fold. First being longevity, and second being a me are issue...

How do Silkie Roosters know Hens are old enough to Mate?

Not sure about chickens, but I know turkeys are a simple issue of "those that are willing" I'm sure as mentioned a mature bird will help the cause, but I also know roosters will often have a favorite in the flock.

    Leg Bands

And by tool they mean pliers. Lol. They make a special tool for it but its nothing more than a gimmick. I work with the DNR in wv every year banding wild geese with usfws migratory bird bands. They are metal and you can do the same with pliers as u can with the "special tool". But yes I use...

    mating

U probably got what they call production reds when u bought the red pullets. These are usually a combo of rhode islands, red stars, and New Hampshire reds. Either way a male from either group will successfully breed any if the other one u bought if u have any roosters in the bunch you will be fine

    Pullet or cockerel?

Honestly I know that mottled one has a pretty pink comb, but I still think looking at the tail that its a pullet

    mating

They will just about all mate if they are standard breeds. Just and FYI..... A pullet is not a breed. That means females. So with the red stars.... Aka golden comets. U could possibly have a male unless they are pullets too. Even then they occasionally get it wrong. Lol

5 weeks old ready for outside living / free range?

That far north I would be worried about the temps at night. Unless u keep a heat lamp on them. I can't imagine them being fully feathered on their backs especially at that age.

    Dead Birds

Oh yeah for sure. U can kill them with heat the same as u can with cold. Been there done that bought the t-shirt. It says lesson learned on the front of it! Lol

    Mixing Roos????

All my breeds are within one weeks age of each other. Growing up together do u think they will be ok or just keep and eye on it and watch for aggressive behavior

How to make a mean rooster scared of u.

U aren't the first person i have heard who does that. I have a freind who had a white leghorn rooster that would get aggressive. One day the ole boy charged him and he grabbed him up and slapped him around a little. That was the last time he charged him. Lol

    Mixing Roos????

I've heard that u can mix brahma males with other Roos and they will be fine. Any truth to that?

Any way to tell for sure sex of barred rock chicks?

I got 10 straight run from TSC about two weeks ago. I did the whole legs up or down trick, an as of now (although early) there are two that are a little lighter than the rest. However there are 4 with short tail including the ones that are lighter. Now I will say that the legs up or down trick...

Need help to ID TSC chicks......

TSC sells a lot of birds, but in all the ones I have been to I have yet to meet any employees that have more than the knowledge of "yep that's a chicken!" I'm sure there are some out the, but they are few and far between. And I live I a very farming oriented community.
