how long can a broody hen be off her eggs?

Yay! Got pictures and figured out how to get them transferred. Loved your pics alibabba!! So very glad your last egg hatched. I guess it wasn't the heat that did mine in if they need temps in the 100's. I will never know what happened. Just thrilled to have at least one and I know that...

how long can a broody hen be off her eggs?

Alas, the 3 other eggs did not make it. It took me so long to give up on them, but I was worried for mamma hen, Goldie's health. So, I candled and at least two had definitely been developing but just didn't make it. I can't seem to get the nerve to crack open the eggs all the way to see. My...

how long can a broody hen be off her eggs?

Today a chick hatched!! So yes, they can be off their eggs for a couple hours in the spring/early summer and still hatch. By my count, it has been 23 days? Does that happen?! There are 3 more eggs to go. I am away so my daughter has been monitoring. She sent me a text picture but I can't...

    Adventures with possums

My little 20 lb. Papillon mix mutt has been catching voles/filed mice (10 so far), but he has missed the possums. My husband dispatched 7 of the today. Six got shot with his 22 and the seventh got hit with a brick. DH said he needs target practice!!! Unfortunately 22 ammo is precious and the...

how long can a broody hen be off her eggs?

Hi, I am right there with you! I have a BO who has been sitting on 4 eggs for about a week now (she began while I was away so I'm depending on my husband's count). I could be off by a couple days. Not all the eggs are hers either. She seems to never get off the nest; however, we went out...

How the heck do you install pinless peepers?

Well, it's now 2015 and I am responding to you. LOL I'm glad you posted because I don't just have 1 bully to subdue but 5. I took in a stray hen that neighbors brought to me because they didn't know where she belonged and I am the only one in the neighborhood who keeps chickens. Needless to...

Existing fence, want to add electric fence

"I also thought about the roundup, and figured we might have to !go that route." Please don't use Round-Up! It is linked to breast cancer. Try using strong vinegar and/or salt water or use them both together. Just keep in mind, I've heard that if you use salt on the ground nothing will grow...

    Is this a rat?

Oh good idea! I will now add a bucket with windshield washer fluid in it to the shed! Poison food and water; what more could they want?

    Is this a rat?

O.K. For everyone who has been wondering if the oatmeal and QuickCrete concrete mix works on killing rodents. I have somewhat of an update. I was able to purchase a small bucket of the QuickCrete and mixed it with oatmeal. My DH cleaned up the shed and all the rodent feces. Put the oatmeal...

    Lost all my girls. Devastated.

Thank you for you sympathy and for your interesting concept. If I end up getting a chick to raise up for my new roo in the spring, then I'll try staying completely hands off with it to see if it works. Of course, I want the same breed to make sure that won't be a factor for this experiment.

    Lost all my girls. Devastated.

Charlie DID protect ALL of my hens! He was little and a perfect gentleman with all his ladies, but I could not go into the chicken yard without a BIG stick. And yes, I really had to nail him one time or two before he would allow me in the yard (with the stick, mind you). We had him from a...

    Lost all my girls. Devastated.

I just lost my beautiful black banty roo this past Friday from a weasel in the middle of the day. I had no idea these predators even existed! He was a hero because he died keeping my 5 hens alive. Thankfully, I have a chicken tractor so I just moved it from what had been a semi-permanent...

Weasel attack- Head injury and possible missing eye

DarthLayer, How did your rooster do? I see no one answered. Unfortunately, I can't answer either. I just lost my Banty Roo in the afternoon on Friday. I'm so upset. Just his neck was wounded and lots of leg feather and feet feather loss. I think he was fighting a weasel off. Thankfully, he...

    Is this a rat?

Glad it committed suicide because my husband refused to let me buy a bag of "Quick Crete" to add to the oatmeal. He didn't want the left overs from a big bag junking up his garage. :( I am still hoping to get some from a neighbor or friend and put it in shed. If I can get my hands on some...

    Is this a rat?

That sounds pretty safe and easy if dish is pushed down in hole where birds can't get to it. Then the culprit could be identified. Hope it's not too good to be true. I have mice under my shed so I think I may go try and find some Fast Set and see what happens.

    Is this a rat?

I've read through the whole thread too. Please keep us posted. The suspense is killing me. I won't even hazard a guess as to what it is.

The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

I love it!!!! What a great idea. I can't wait to show DH. It actually looks similar to a train track and he loves trains. I just might be able to get him to build me some. LOL

The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

Hi, I also get my feed from Countryside Organics and ferment it. I use filtered water too. Don't worry about the "fart" smell. The reason you are getting that is because Countryside adds fish meal (but check your label). I am using layer mash, so it may not be in the chick feed but I'm...

    screaming/screeching hen !?!?

You actually did make me LOL!! I still hear that sound but don't go running now. Usually it is that they are getting ready to LAY an egg and do actually want in the nest box. After they lay the egg, I get to hear the song. It is much nicer to hear. Thanks for the laugh. I needed it.
