I've had chickens now for 11 years, since 2013.
One of my hens, a Hamburg, was hatched in December 2012, before I got my flock and I adopted her May 2013.
One Minorca chick I got in May 2013.
Another one, a Buff Orpington, is from my original batch of chicks of April 2013. She and the...
I just posted a rather lengthy bit about my bird, Penny, who seems to have some of these similar symptoms. I also thought the wet spot was from the roof, but it's from the hen. I wish you luck with her - I hope we can get the information we need to help these gals out.
Our Gold-laced Wyandotte, Penny, seems to be declining. She is a little over 4 years old. She is one of 11 hens. We also have 1 Silkie rooster, and 3 chicks which 2 of our Silkies are raising off to the side from the main flock.
It's been a few months since Penny has laid an egg. For a long...
I saw that as well - and I, too, am leery of the plastic parts. We don't often get as cold here in NC to worry about the all-metal parts. But I bet the mice would get thru those plastic parts pretty quick. I do store my feed in a metal trashcan, and so far, after nearly 4 years, it's holding up...
I've about had it with the mouse in my coop. (Yes, I know it's probably a whole village of them - but for some reason we only see the white-bellied one with certain markings.) I was researching some sort of treadle feeder, and thought I'd check - do you still love it? Has it worked well over a...
Today we discovered that 3 out of 4 of my Silkie teenagers prefer to play in the rain and get thoroughly drenched. I took pity on the sweet one and brought it in for a blow-dry. When I took her back out, the other two wet ones had set aside their differences and had snuggled up together...
Most of my silkies seem to find cover under the trees or bushes, except for my Partridge Silkie rooster - that boy likes to get WET! When we had some nasty wet and cold weather this winter I did bring him in the house to thaw the ice off of him.
We got our chickies at a family-run feed store/farm supply place - Triangle Farm & Home near Durham NC. Overall, I was pretty pleased with my service there.
They were stored in an upright metal brooder cage - like a giant square layer cake, and all looked pretty healthy. And it smelled pretty...
That's a lovely looking chicken! One of our silkie chicks looks like a chipmunk, and after doing some googling I understand she is a partridge silkie. I hope she looks this lovely when she grows up!
They look a little like my Dominique chicks did earlier this month. Now they are feathering out and changing colors - one to black/white stripes (is that called "barred" maybe?), one to copper-tipped feathers, and well, the one that looks like a penguin still looks like a penguin :) Dominiques...
My Dominique chicks do this also. Glad to read this here. They are bright and alert, and seem quite healthy, so I wasn't too worried. Sometimes they stretch out a wing too, and half-close their eyes... they look like they are lounging by the pool!
We got 8 baby chicks at the beginning of this month.
A Partridge Silkie named "Chipmunk" (wow, I see now how amazingly original that is. But she is the first chickie I picked - because, she looks like a chipmunk!)
A grey Silklie with rust markings on her head named "Freya" (the kids said she...
