I completely agree, why would you use something that will harm you on your chicken? My chooks use just garden soil and sand. They free range and I check them for mites and fleas every couple of weeks... It's been over a year....nothing so far.
We have been having issues with sparrows coming into the chicken run and eating all the food, when I first got the chooks there was only one or two resident sparrows taking a bit of food here and there, it wasn't a problem then. Just after spring this year, practically over night we had a flock...
I would ask for the value of the chooks, plus money it would cost to feed them to the day they were attacked and any medical cost for the surviving chook. As for the dog (I love my dogs) that came to your yard, if the law says it ok to shoot them, do it the next time it come back, if the owner...
hcurrie 7 I am so sorry to hear of your lost :( I know exactly how you feel, I have also lost 2 chickens to predation. How did you lose her? I cried for a full day after mine died...and I only had them for like 3 months. Even my bestfriends thought it was weird that I could get so upset over a...
Thanks everyone, I am gonna start keeping the balls and will consider disposing of them if I collect more that a couple. I hate the whole..."but they are just kids" excuse, seriously I was never that annoying when I was young, my parents taught me to respect other people's property. I will give...
There isn't any law regarding how we keep the chooks other than to have less than 12 (we have 5), the chooks can't jump the fence separating us and the neighbours. Their run is open top and being heavier breed birds they don't ever jump their run's fencing...until the last two times the balls...
I m too thinking I should keep all their balls, we have 6 foot fencing so the chickens are contained in our yard, looks like the kids have climbed the fence and throw stuff at the chooks, it's stressing them out which stresses me out. We have dogs, maybe we can blame the loss of balls on the...
I have no issue with my neighbour before, they keep to themselves usually. But since we got the chooks I have noticed random stuff in my garden. We live in the suburb so we are located close to our neighbours. My backyard face their front yard. I have found random food, flowers and food wrappers...
Your gold lace look amazing! Her lace is so defined, such a shame that you lost her :(
The photo of your girls dirt bathing in the backyard is so adorable. Will you be replacing her with another gold lace Wyandotte?
Thank you! :) All my girls are Standard size so will be heavy ladies in a couple of months. I need them big to discourage my dogs from picking on them
I got each one from a different breeder, I got the Australorps from a lady in Yea (she has some amazing looking Australorps!), the Silver Lace...
I wouldn't be surprised! Been lurking on this site since Jan.
I used to have Isa Browns but after reading up on the different breeds I decided to have a little party in my backyard and purchased a few breeds. I got a Gold and a Silver Lace Wyandotte, a Light Sussex and 2 super cute Australorps...
Hi everyone, I was just wondering what the general consensus for the personalities of the Light Sussex are? I have a little 14 weeks pullet that is actually picking on my 26 weeks Wyandotte. She picked on the other older girls as well and even drawn blood twice from the 26 weeks SLW. Do they...
I am actually considering entering in a show for a bit of fun, but if I get any more involved with poultry my husband might kick me and chickens out :P we agreed on 2 pet chickens, currently we have 5 (I swear I only counted 2).
Thank you! :) The gent that sold me "pepper" said she came from a show line or something, but I didn't take too much notice because I want her as a pet, not a breeding stock (which is a real shame cos she is very beautiful).
Here is my baby Silver Laced Wyandotte, she is 24 weeks old and is currently getting picked on by a 13 weeks old Light Sussex because she is so gentle. She is so funny, this morning a crow flew above us and she couldn't find any immediate shelter in the yard so she ran under my legs lol.
I m trying to introduced my new POL Wyandotte to my existing pullets (which are only 13 weeks old), the pullets attacked the older bird and made her bleed. Will be keeping them seperate for a couple of days, I always thought its the older bird that is bossy. Good luck with integrating your next...
