    I'm going on an adventure!

I've Let Pip and Helena out into the big pen after letting them out for 'a bit' the last couple of days. I sat out with them for a couple of hours and now I'm periodically checking the Blink cam to make sure things are okay. I had to close off their coop and pen as the Big Girls were going in...

    Sapphire Gem Egg or…?

Between twenty and twenty-one weeks. But my last flock of Legbar and Legbar crosses were thirty-one weeks before they started to lay. So, you might have quite a wait! But I hope not. Rain is the one that's laying, she's the first one in this photo.

    Sapphire Gem Egg or…?

At the moment, about every 3rd day. I collected her 4th egg today. At least one of my others should be laying within the next week to ten days.

    Sapphire Gem Egg or…?

Yes, none of those are from Cream Legbars. This is cream legbar: In my experience, at least for the Legbars I've had, they lay a sort of a light teal rather than what I would call a true blue. Although this may be subject to change as only one of my four is laying as yet.

    I'm going on an adventure!

Well! Rain figured it out :) . The one with the "x's" is the ceramic egg, so I can tell the difference.

Manual turners: how are we holding our eggs?

The reason I quantified with how the incubator is designed. Computer fans are cheap, so I would assume forced air. And, here's a thought, on humidity issues, doing a dry incubation for the first couple of weeks after which as you point out turning (or tilting) either one wouldn't be as necessary...

    I'm going on an adventure!

Along with the frozen 3L ex-cranberry juice jug I put in the big waterer two or three times a day, I've also been putting one in the nestbox area of Pip and Helena's coop. I put a flake of straw in there, mostly just to differentiate it from the main coop area, but I thought it might be a good...

Manual turners: how are we holding our eggs?

I think at least part of the answer might depend on the design of the incubator itself. Just a guess, but it seems to me the absolutely simplest thing would be to put them in egg cartons and tilt the incubator itself (45°?) however many times per day. That would keep you from having to open it...

    I'm going on an adventure!

Welp, went by Tractor Supply this morning to pick up feed, and checked out the chicks as per usual (no, I didn't succumb!) and I did see that they've got the Cinnamon Queens in with the bantams so that's one thing absolutely verified. I suspect they may all come from the hatchery like this and...

    Never had a broody hen

I suspect it's more a matter of mass. An ant can fall a hundred feet and not be bothered, an elephant would go splat.

    Asphalt drive too hot?

Can you just asphalt the drive and gravel the courtyard? Geogrid, or Permeable Paving.

    I'm going on an adventure!

Amber, the nosiest of the bunch, checking out the new coop. Helena and Pippin have settled in. One thing I do not like about this coop is the lack of ventilation. Not long after I took this picture, I ripped the plastic off the "window" and stapled on a piece of hardware cloth. Other than...

    I'm going on an adventure!

Coop came yesterday evening (after FedEx had said "delayed" and "rescheduled", but that's another story,) and I spent the morning with Mr. RoseHawke's assistance assembling it. Assembly went very smoothly which pleased me no end. I think the worst flat pack we ever put together was a computer...

    Brooder size

Some chicks are just nuts. I've got two 8-week chicks in a 16 square foot pet play pen, and they make use of every square inch occasionally running amok.

The Pippin Floof is 8 weeks old today.

    I'm going on an adventure!

There are the littles in the run, and then there's Pippin and Helena (who, along with Falco, will probably be rehomed,) in a pet playpen out in the Shop Annex. Despite two fans on the pen with a jug of ice in front of one of them in the pen, and being inside, the annex just feels hotter than...

    I'm going on an adventure!

Did an actual check on the run girls just now, expanding on the "virtual" checks I do throughout the day via a Blink cam. It's a good thing I did! This would be from Rain. It must've caught her by surprise even though I've noticed her checking out the nest boxes and the Chiclets carrier as...

What's the temperature where you are???

The temperature is HOT . From my Weather Station. EDIT: Oh, by the way, we didn't actually get any rain today. I believe the rain sensor is sensitive enough that it's picking up the dew.

    I'm going on an adventure!

Well, I've pretty much done everything I possibly can to try to help them beat the heat short of bringing them into the air-conditioning!

    Nature-Themed Hatch-Along

May I have #31, "Peregrine"? Oh, and apparently the sawdust thing is how exhibition breeders among others pack the eggs, it absolutely stops any shifting.
