The post says the body of the bird wasn't eaten that one leg was ripped off. I totally agree if the beast of the bird is eaten but just the head is probably a weasel. Ol mare is spot on for coon reaching through wire."thumbs" make them more efficient than other predators
Eating just the head sounds like a weasel. They are very crafty little buggers. They typically only eat the head and neck but not the body. Coons may eat only the leg though I've never heard of it. A raccoon is a big predator and usually eats the entire bird
This is our first coop. Original run was 4 feet by 6 feet which accommodates 5 birds nicely based on all the space requirements I could find. I just couldn't stand for them to be so penned up so I extended it. This coop is built from all salvaged materials with the exception of the wire and...
I figured that both of them are cockerels. They are 10 weeks old and the ones I am sure are hens do not have those waddles and combs though they are from the same mother. The idea that they are mutt chickens (EE many times removed maybe) is a solid suggestion. Here's one more pic of each but you...
Yea I got these guys from a poultry swap meet and the guy said they were mixed I assumed they were ee's. I see more leg horn though in my novice opinion. Also from string I saw that white almost assuredly rooster. This is the other suspect:

The batch of birds this one comes from is 10 weeks old. I was told they are an Americana mix but not really sure. Pretty sure this is a Roo. Any feedback?
I agree building is the way. The thing to remember about prefab coops is that they are marked up with retail costs. A coop that you pay 700 bucks for may only have 100 bucks worth of wood in the whole kit. I hate getting screwed like that. There are so many great ideas on this site and I have...
Hello all, I am from South Louisiana and am new to raising chickens. We started out with 9 birds: 5 Easter eggers and 4 wyandottes. So far have lost only one and pretty sure one is a Roo but hey. Really glad to have this site and look forward to everyone's experience with this awesome endeavor...
