I think you're absolutely right! I know that had to have been what happened to start it off to begin with. The two younger roosters were hatched together with the 3 hens and all 5 have been together all along with no problems. The older rooster is back with his flock of hens and just fine...
Thank you for the advice!! Yes, I knew that the older rooster would claim his territory which is why I'm so glad I stayed out there to supervise because it would've been even worse! I was just more shocked that the two brothers are going at it now. I couldn't tell who the aggressor was...
I need help!! Okay, I have two coops and each flock stay separated - one flock has 1 rooster with 11 hens and the other flock has 2 roosters with 3 hens. Reason for two separated flocks is that the flock of 5 were hatched this past spring and have all been together since hatching. I had not...
I have the same incubator and I usually try to keep mine around 25-30% from day 1-18 and then of course much higher on lockdown. I also put 1 of the vent plugs in and have both removed during lockdown.
Did you only add water to one of the wells in the bottom or all three?
Awe, I'm so sorry!!! That is terrible. I had the same thing happen...mine was just a few days old and he wouldn't drink either. I dunked his beak and everything and he just wouldn't. Then he just went down hill real fast and passed away too. It's so heartbreaking! Hang in there and just...
I know, me too. I was really pulling for this little guy. This was my first batch and first time incubating so I've definitely learned ALOT and hoping to do better on the next batch. Again, thank you!
Okay, so I went in there and through the incubator window it didn't appear he was breathing anymore. I quick opened it and got him and he has died. I'm SO heartbroken!! I know this happens and knew that this could go either way but really wanted to give him a chance. I guess I didn't act...
Okay, going to do that now. I've been keeping the membrane damp with a q-tip and warm water every couple of hours. All of the blood vessels are really small but I do see one that is larger and it's near his bottom...or what appears to be his bottom. Hard to tell. I'll take a picture too so...
sumi - can you please help me? I saw what a wonderful job you did in assisting flippyshoes with this hatch and am wondering if you could weigh in on my problem? Here is the thread....https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/791616/help-day-21-and-possible-shrink-wrapped-chick
Thank you so much!
Okay, so he's made it through the night but it seems like his breathing has slowed down. I really don't want to lose him but don't want to do more harm to him if he hasn't absorbed his yolk sac yet. His beak has broken through the internal membrane now so he's breathing but not chirping...
I knew sometimes they can hatch after day 21 but this hatch had not gone too well so I assumed it had died like the others. I had left the others in the incubator un-touched until almost day 29 and then had tossed them because I could confirm they died. Now that it is alive, I don't want to...
Today is day 21 for my white leghorn bantam and I candled it this morning when it hadn't hatched. I couldn't see any movement so I assumed it had died. I put a hole in the air sack and noticed there was movement!!! It has not internally pipped yet so I put it back in the incubator and have...
Yes, that may help. I had one hatch one time and another was chirping in it's shell but wasn't due until the next day, but with the other one in there running around and chirping it encouraged the second one to hatch a little early.
I agree, I would help. I was in the same situation a week ago with one of mine. It was chirping for almost a full day without a pip and I didn't know if I should help or wait longer. I finally decided to help so I made a small pip in the air cell and removed just a small portion of the shell...
I've been keeping a close eye on the hatched chick and he's still about the same but I did get him to drink a little. Hoping that's all it was. The chick in the egg died. It was rocking and chirping after I removed the hatched egg and then it just stopped. I finally decided to candle it and...
Now I've got another egg that is due tomorrow that was rocking today and I heard chirping, but now nothing?! Do I leave it in the incubator or try to assist? It hasn't moved or made any noise for hours. Don't know why it just stopped.
I've tried several times. When the water touches his beak he just shakes his head...won't drink. I've dipped my finger in the water and rubbed it on the end of his beak and he gets a little, but not much. He just lays ALOT. I do have a thermometer in there and it's 99.5 degrees. The other...
My white leghorn bantam just hatched yesterday morning and was doing great! I left him/her in the incubator for a full 24 hrs and he was pretty much completely dry so I moved him and the other hatchling into the brooder under the lamp. I read that you should dip their beaks into water and get...
