    Treadle Feeder scares my flock

I have thought of using a different material. I am using a window now that it is getting cold and the sparrows are fewer. But I like to let the chickens out daily and it is a dinner bell for the sparrows. As an update, the feeder is doing well. The chickens seem to be used to it and eat...

    Treadle Feeder scares my flock

Thanks. I've thought of that. The only reason I want one outside is because my ducks will likely want to be outside more than the chickens once the snow flies. I would have to protect it fairly well though because the blowing snow seems to saturate everything. The ducks will saturate...

    Treadle Feeder scares my flock

I have had it propped open for a week now and will start having it close an inch today. I will just put a screw into the stud next to the lid so it can only close about an inch. I used some weather stripping on the lid to dampen the sound. I was hoping that was enough so they wouldn't get...

Thanks Gallo. Great suggestion. I started implementing it today.

    Treadle Feeder scares my flock

Sparrows finally discovered our feed and so I made a treadle feeder. It works well and the link is to a video you can watch. I placed it in the coop and the chickens scatter whenever it opens up. I don't know how best to ease them into the feeder being their main source of food. Any...

One other weird thing was one of the ten turned out white like an Amber white. I don't know if this was a misplaced chick in the brooder, or if the Sagittas have vastly different colors like this. Considering the parentage I think she was a misplaced pullet.

Review by '' on item 'Sagitta Chiken'

We bought ten of these for meat last year. Because they grew more slowly and we wanted more eggs we decided to keep them around. We expanded our coop and they started laying very well about October. Our original flock started to molt and so we were happy to have the 8 or so eggs we would get...

    Golden Sexlink Crowing

Dear All, Just an update as to what has happened. As it turns out the two are roosters and these are apparently not sex-links. It was a straight run of some other kind of bird. They grew quickly so I assume that they were intended to be fryers. I have come to the 100% conclusion that they...

    Golden Sexlink Crowing

Here is an updated picture of what the supposed rooster looks like. Is it possible that this is some kind of meat bird due to how fast it grew or are we pretty sure that these are production reds?

    Slowed Egg Production

This last week the egg production is hitting max again. Soon it should be regular I hope. The last few days have been 3,7,4,11. I'm really excited about the 11. I think another week and we will be up to a dozen a day again. I think it was just a molt process. I'm just surprised it lasted...

    Golden Sexlink Crowing

I'm hoping that what I say next may answer most of my questions. The "Red" chicks that I bought grew very quickly. They are nearly twice the size of the amber whites that we bought at the same time. So, do Golden Sex Links or Production Reds or both grow very quickly? We did buy these as...

    Slowed Egg Production

We took him out for about two weeks. Short I know but he will be getting a new home soon. We let him back by accident yesterday and the hens seem to be holding their own against him now. We will see

    Golden Sexlink Crowing

Thanks for the info. Just a question I think I know the answer to already. Since the Red Sex Links are a cross between a rooster of one breed and a hen of another breed I assume that if you hatched eggs from the combo of a Red Sex Link Rooster and Hen that the color sexing will no longer...

    Golden Sexlink Crowing

Thanks Walking, I know the color thing with the sex-link, I'm just double checking. I kind of figured that there was very little chance of a mutation in a rooster.

    Golden Sexlink Crowing

Dear All, This spring we purchased 10 more pullet chicks. Five are amber whites and five are Golden Sex links. We also have an older flock that has a rooster. The chicks are all about 3 months old now and this last week two of the Sex Links started to answer our rooster by crowing. I then...

    Slowed Egg Production

We have two two year old RIR, three two year old NHR and ten one year old Sagittas. We also have a Silkie rooster. This winter we were up to about 12 eggs a day. It was great. Then just after Christmas it dropped to 3-6 per day. The older five molted last fall and the younger ten don't appear to...

Thanks guys. For some reason I have been having a hard time posting to anything and this was the first place. I'll repost in the suggested area.
