How do I pick up my crazy roo??

This rings true to my flock too.

How do I pick up my crazy roo??

Not always as easy as you'd assume. I'm just going to agree to disagree with you here.... from personal experience with my own kids and others children around chickens and other farm animals.

How do I pick up my crazy roo??

I'm going to go out on a limb here and assume you don't have little kids. When it's involving a toddler, the article doesn't matter. That bird may be okay with adults... MAYBE if it's worked with but that tiny human will be attacked again and again until it's big enough to hit that rooster...

How do I pick up my crazy roo??

I've personally never known of anyone whose been able to turn a nasty rooster who chases and spurs people into a friendly pet. She's also not taking about a 10 year old kid who can whack it with a stick or give it a good punt if it tried to flog him. A toddler is not capable of defending...

How do I pick up my crazy roo??

I loved my roo's too and I was heart broken but my 2 year old ended up with a nasty infection that required two weeks of antibiotics from being spurred. After the dr visit, kids went inside and I grabbed the gun to put an end to it. Some people are fine with aggressive roosters but they have...

How do I pick up my crazy roo??

You can throw a towel over him to make it easier to pick him up and once you're holding him give him treats. I've had 9 roosters in 7 years and honestly every one of mine was either nice or mean. There was no in between. Good luck, I hope yours can be an exception to the rule...

    Roosters crow at night???

In my experience, no there isn't anything you can do to make him stop, if you want to keep him. I had some that crowed every single morning at 4am and 6am, just like clockwork. We ended up having to cull them. (It was a totally unrelated reason why we culled.) Unfortunately they will crow at...

    Broody Hen Thread!

I had a bantam that did that as well. As I learned through advice from here, if you want to candle or mess with a broody darkness is your friend. Wait until it's dark out then go reaching under her, she may growl or peck at you. We have too many predators for me to leave mine outside...

Can any help with my rooster ?

Most likely the swelling is from the infection just spreading.

    Broody Hen Thread!

Mine all love dried mealworms. They also love hard boiled eggs that I let cool and then crumble up for them or watermelon rinds. They'll really eat just about anything but when I make meals I keep my chicken snack bowl near by and toss lettuce and veggie pieces in there along with fruits and...

    Broody Hen Thread!

I believe it's just an adjustment period. When I introduced my three new birds this year to my preexisting flock mine did the same thing. Just give them a little time to adjust. It took my little ones a good week to get out and romp around in the pen with the others. I would go in mid...

If you could adopt one of these chickens...

I'd have to go with #5!

Hatching with broody - will other hens/rooster kill chicks?

I'm not sure what happened with mine. This was my first time hatching and we did it with a broody bantam. Because of my lack of knowledge and moving her and the nest in the daytime she killed three of four of her viable eggs from being off her nest for an entire day. When the chick finally...

    Broody Hen Thread!

I'm new to this whole dealing with a broody thing so I could be wrong but my hen that is currently broody was off of her eggs for an entire day and they were all cold to the touch. I took someone's advice on here and moved her in the evening and she's back to sitting on them. She only had two...

    Broody Hen Thread!

Thanks for the advise! Maybe that was the issue, I was moving her in the daylight. I just moved her into a large cat carrier and threw a cloth over half of the holes so she has some ventilation but limited light as you suggested. We shall see how this goes with her once the sun comes up...

    Raising Guinea Fowl 101

I just wanted to say thank-you for this thread and peoples responses to my question a little while back! :-) I originally watched my young guineas wander/sprint off into the woods, unlike the chickens we have who are generally penned but when let out stay in the yard, my heart sunk thinking I...

    Broody Hen Thread!

In need of some advise! My Golden Phoenix Bantam has gone broody for the second time in two years that we've had her in the past week and a half. She is the only one of our 9 hens to ever go broody. The first time she went broody outside of the pen and seeing as we live out in the woods I...

    Raising Guinea Fowl 101

Thanks for all of the great information! This is our first experience with guineas and I was wondering how to coop train them for the evenings. I had made the mistake of just letting them run wild and it took an entire day to find and capture just four of them on our 5 wooded acres! Great...

New to thinning of the flock, how to choose which roos to slaughter?!?!

Yes, we live in the country with quite a few older farmers around. There aren't any that I am aware of that would be giving a "loving home" to any rooster where that home didn't include a hot bath and some chopped veggies and pasta and a spoon!

New to thinning of the flock, how to choose which roos to slaughter?!?!

Thank you everyone for your input. It is much appreciated! We know what we would like in our flock ideally but with this being our first time with chickens I was just curious what others have done, what has worked for them and why in case someone had a good point that we hadn't considered! :-)
