Just as an update she’s five weeks old and has the little tuft found on females. She looks 100% girl to me so far.

Need leg brace idea for chick

Got a three week old I found in tsc when she was 2 days old with other chicks pecking her hock making it swell. She held it up to get around. Brought her home and put her under my hen who just hatched one chick and they’ve done well together. The bad leg is better and she can put pressure on it...

Sapphire sky early guess roo or girl?

Thank you both! You’ve given me hope. The other baby I got was injured and I purposely took her in. The others were pecking her leg. She’s doing so well under a mama hen so far (knock on wood) but I’ll have to pen this one if a rooster Bc this little girl can’t be bred ever. Thanks again

    Bumble foot

I have been using decolorized iodine for years since I saw it recommended here and have had great results. But I can't find it anywhere now. I wonder if they have discontinued it for some reason.

    The one-legged chick

I just took in a chick from tsc that the others were pecking her hock. I had this same thing two years ago and made a lot of mistakes. I’m trying not to make those same mistakes with this one. Your post gives me hope should she not ever use this leg. Right now she just uses wings and won’t...

It's HOT here and mom was standing up off egg for up to 4 hours

Do you think her egg will survive? Temps in barn were about 100 degrees when this happened. She was so hot out there that she was just standing up with egg under her. Egg was not hot. Was not cold either. I have since brought mom and her one egg into my air conditioned house and she's in a dark...

Need tips on how to manage hydration with peritoneal fluid draining.

There's no way to stop the leak. I used a tiny 25 gauge needle on her and when i took it out, she's leaking like crazy. She's going to dehydrate. I tubed her some fluids but she kept fighting me so I gave up. I need to plug this hole. Cornstarch doesn't work (not blood of course). I can't think...

Need tips on how to manage hydration with peritoneal fluid draining.

I've got a production red who is 8 years old. I'm shocked to see this breed at her age, but she has been a fantastic hen. She started looking wide in the hips about six weeks ago. No fluid at that time. Started a week ago with fluid. Seemed to come on overnight. The last two times I had a...

Hen eating feathers - impacted crop/gizzard

Oh no I am so sorry. I haven’t had any experience with one eating a screw yet that I know of. I was on the forums today bc I had a sick 2 yo hen who had crop surgery Monday. She was never the same after. I’ve had so many crop surgeries by the same vet. But this hen didn’t tolerate it...

Hen eating feathers - impacted crop/gizzard

For my girl this literally lasts start to finish about three months bc she gets yeast with it too. She has had it the last two years. I hope she doesn’t get it this year. I have a Cochin who for three or four years would get a gizzard impaction during her moult and would eat awful stuff...

Hen eating feathers - impacted crop/gizzard

I’m so sorry I’m just seeing this! I never get notified by email when someone responds to me. So when they eat roughage like that I believe it’s bc they are seeking to fix whatever is wrong in their gut. My hen ate feathers bc I had her indoors with me and she needed something to help whatever...

The first hen I got from my neighbor. She had been rehomed countless times. Second one from a friend. He got her as a chick from a local person who just sold a variety. He got two of each of buff Orpington, red star, barred rock, black australorp and what he claimed were two of same white...

Please help me identify this breed

This is Ms Thelma. I had one just like her in 2019 that I took in from a neighbor and she died soon after to being egg bound. Ended up giving a home to some hens from a friend in 2021 and I was so thrilled to see another one just like her, Thelma. This one got killed by a predator recently...
