Build a nestbox and they will come.....

You'll definitely want to put something in the box to prevent the eggs from cracking when they drop. We put straw in ours with mixed results. We're often having to put more straw into the boxes because the girls love to kick it out. In the spring we're thinking of stapling down some...

I need 1 or 2 more girls. what are your opinions???

We have two recommendations: Delaware and Wyandottes. We have a Delaware and, contrary to what I've read about them on the forums, she has turned out to be the absolute sweetest of all of our hens. She's loves attention, loves to have her feather stroked, loves to follow us around the yard...

Update: she didn't make it. (Near-death hen....what is causing this?)

Sadly, she didn't make it. I went to the feed store to buy some wormer and when I returned she had crashed and died. I feel awful...this is our 3rd hen out of 7 that we've lost this year, albeit to different circumstances. But still, she was our first egg layer and our blue ribbon winner at...

    Hatchery Delawares--What If?

We picked up a Delaware from a local feed store before the summer started, and she'd turned out to be our sweetest bird. She loves to follow you around the yard, and is extremely eager to eat out of your hand. She's our lap hen, as compared to our Buff Orpington, who is the most dominant bird...

Help! 9mo old hen laying on her side, eyes mostly closed

Sadly, my sick hen didn't make it. Not sure what happened to her, but it was too much for her to take. I feel awful for her.

Update: she didn't make it. (Near-death hen....what is causing this?)

How can I tell if its worms? Would their be segments in her stool, like a tapeworm segment in a dog's stool? Also, if one hen has it, would more of them have it?

Update: she didn't make it. (Near-death hen....what is causing this?)

An update from 3 hours ago. She is actually less weak, but still pretty lethargic. We have here wrapped in a towel on top of a heat pad. Her eyes open occassionally and she'll take drinks of water that we spoon feed her. Only 3 hours ago I had to pry open her mouth, so I think this is an...

Update: she didn't make it. (Near-death hen....what is causing this?)

We just examined her and I can feel no eggs inside her. She hasn't laid for over a month, since she was chased (but not harmed) by a neighbor's dog. However, it was until a couple days ago that her behavior was at all out of the ordinary. And again, directly above her vent is a quarter-sized...

Help! 9mo old hen laying on her side, eyes mostly closed

I'm curious to know of a solution here. We are currently having the exact same experience with our 9 mo old wyandotte. About a month or so ago she was chased by a dog that got into our yard (we assume she was chased as we saw the dog in our yard and she ended up hiding inside a rosemary bush...

Update: she didn't make it. (Near-death hen....what is causing this?)

A month or so ago, we noticed that our Silver Wyandotte pullet stopped laying. A couple days ago, we brought her into our house because she was laying down in the chicken run and extremely lethargic. When we brought her in, she immediately took an interest in the food and water we provided her...
