    Chunnel Project

The veggies have done great this year and the chickens have eaten every piece of grass they can get their beaks on. The great part is that if something in the garden doesn’t turn out right I can throw it to the chickens. I have access to the Chunnel inside the fenced area and can remove a few...

    Chunnel Project

It took them a little while to find their way back in but it seems to be ok now.

    Chunnel Project

I found some stainless steel raised beds on Northern Tool’s website. The original size is small so I ignored the instructions and combined two of them together. Pretty inexpensive compared to other options like cinder blocks. Time will tell if they last.

    Chunnel Project

Not yet, I’m letting them eat the grass and fertilize until I bring soil in for the raised beds. Also need to figure out the door situation for access to both sides of the Chunnel. The solar powered ones that open at sunlight are pricey. Anyone know an easy way to get the blue stuff off the...

    Chunnel Project

Don’t you know the insects MUST pass through the Chunnel first? Even though the front gate basically allows them access to the same space, haha. It’s a bit of wishful thinking but if they eat a few grasshoppers I will be happy. Chiggers were really bad last year as well so any help is appreciated.

    Chunnel Project

We are in southwest Fort Worth, Texas. I added it to my profile. Thanks for the reminder! I will keep posting as the project continues. It’s been fun so far but my hands are all torn up from the fencing materials. I should have worn gloves but it becomes hard to grip things.

    Chunnel Project

That has crossed my mind as well. I don’t have any openings except to the coop so if one of my ladies gets stuck in the Chunnel I hope she will be able to find her way back to the rest of the flock! We will see how it goes. Also, I tried to keep it super simple and not use wood (except on the...

    Chunnel Project

Forgot to mention, the Chunnel is made of 5’ tall welded wire that is attached to the fence with hog clips. It’s staked in the ground with landscape clips which probably aren’t strong enough long term so I will be looking for a replacement soon. The trickiest part was connecting the corners and...

    Chunnel Project

After watching the Fixer Upper episode where they built the Chunnel around their raised beds I have been wanting to do something similar in my backyard. I started by sketching it out on paper and then had a fence built around my metal coop. The fence is cedar with no climb panels because we have...

    Metal coops

If you have questions let me know! I’m never going back to wooden coops.

    Metal coops

Here are some pictures of my metal coop. The galvanized roof is actually cooler in the summer and deflects some heat. Plus it’s open and allows for lots of breeze. The hens love it!

    New House - Need Advice

Thanks for the feedback so far. We have coyotes, hawks, raccoons, and possibly some other varmints. I'm a big fan of free ranging but after losing my whole flock to a pit bull I have become more cautious. I live in Texas so weather is not a big concern. I like the shed idea.

    New House - Need Advice

One detail I forgot, I need to build something on a budget because of course the house cost us way more than we expected. Thanks for your help!
