Today my flock grew by one. I got a bird that needed rehomed and he is probably one of the sweetest roos I've ever seen. He isn't afraid of strangers, doesn't mind being carried or picked up. He's also very vocal and can make some sounds I haven't heard before.
Some of my sweetest chickens are roosters. I have one that I call Dude (The Big Lebowski) that will follow me wherever I go. If I check the mail, Dude will walk to the mailbox and back with me. I have others that will come up to me and brush against my legs like a cat. I have some massive...
Although it doesn't sound like a big thing, I let Dude go into the spare run for a dirt bath and some sun. Dude has been sick and based on the people I have spoken to we are all surprised he is still alive. Last week his body temperature dropped off. A lot. I could put him out in the sunshine...
One of my hens has become an escape artist. She has somehow learned to get out of the run and then she heads to the barn. Just now I went out to check on them and found her sitting in one of the infirmary cages with a look that said "What took you so long?" Ordinarily I would find it cute but...
16 so far today and that's the most I've gotten from my girls. I have 33 hens but they are all young. It looks like all the NH girls are laying eggs and now some of the australorps are as well.
I was walking with my king roo today and checking out what the hawks were doing. They were out in force and snagging birds in mid air. It would have been interesting on Discovery Channel or Animal Planet but not so cool when it is 100 feet from the main coop.
Teddy and I were patrolling. He...
I took my king roo Teddy over near me while I relaxed outside today. The first thing he wanted to do was go over to the bachelor coop where all the roos are and show them he was still their boss. A couple came up and challenged him but Teddy stood tall and started crowing for all to hear that...
I did a couple things to work on his attitude. The first thing was I separated him from the rest of the birds so he lost his position in the flock. I denied him access to them, didn't let him see them or interact with them. I started at 3 days and put him back but he soon find his way back to...
A couple weeks ago I had a hen attacked by a roo and her head was in rough shape. Today if you saw her you would never know she had been hurt. I still call her 'hurt girl' because she doesn't have a name but she looks great.
I spent time training the roo that attacked her and I noticed...
And the count went up to 8 eggs in one day and the first day any of my chicks have laid eggs. They all came out awesome but the one by itself was the first so it's going to be kept :)
Wooohooo! One of my little girls laid her first egg and it's the first that I've gotten. It's small but perfect just like my hen :)
According to Wolfram that makes her just under 17 weeks old.
When it rains, it pours. I checked and found six more!
A lot of it was the way he said it, it was one of those hesitant stammer moments. It is hard to describe without having been there but it sounded awkward. I politely answered the questions I was asked but it just made me laugh on the inside because he is a retired cop that worked in a big city...
Today I was asked "Does the hen have to fornicate to lay an egg?" It wasn't just the fact that he asked it but that he used the word fornicate. I tried very hard not to laugh at him lol
Does laughing when I read this make me a bad person? I had a similar story about a week ago except it involved peanuts and berries and a very excited rooster.
