This is an old farmer's trick. I've tried it. Works great! Make sure the girls have a constant supply of warm water. I haven't lost any egg production due to the cold winter.
I caught my girls scratching in the part of the yard where my cats poop. I don't know for sure, but I think they may have been eating some of the cats' poop. Should I eat the eggs or not? Is there more of a chance of ecoli/salmonella?
Thanks. I'll try the golf balls.
I only have two temporary nesting boxes (one on top of the other) and they are both lower than the roost. I'm in the proccess of building a 5x nesting box. Someone told me 4 per box was sufficient?
One more thing. How big should their eggs be? These are...
I guess I have some strange chickens. Mine have about three ft per bird in the coop and five per in the run--they free range quite a bit. At night, they have plenty of roost space, but they insist on sleeping (nearly) on top of each other. I never had a problem with them not wanting to go to...
I have twenty birds and I think one has started laying--possibly two. The only problem is it is laying on the roost. I have trays under their roost that catch their poop. Unfortunately, it is now an egg catcher, too. How do I encourage the layer (still don't know which one it is) to use a...
I lost one of my black ausies yesterday. I'm still pretty unsure what to do. I'm halfway tempted to just get rid of the dog. My children are even neutral as to what to do about her.
She's (the dog) chased the chickens before, but never gone after them to kill them. I walked out with my...
I am currently using the deep litter method with pine shavings and it has been working great. Last night we had quite the thunderstorm, and water got in a window I left open by mistake. 1/4 of the coop got drenched, but I got called into work and didn't have time to clean up. Hopefully the...
There are around 800 deaths a year from Histoplasmosis, and it's most common in the Northeast.
There are over 11,000 deaths a year from the flu (CDC actually says 36,000, but that's debatable).
40,000 a year die in America in car accidents. I spend a lot more time in my car than I do my...
I've heard that many people can get it and not even know it. Their body deals with it, and it's done. Very young children, older folks, and weak immune systems are the risk factors.
I would be catious, but not scared about it. It is treatable, and only very rarely does it become serious to...

Mine came in this morning. I had the exact same thought!
I kept watching them to make sure they were breathing. The other ones that were running all over the place exploring came back to the lamp and did the same thing, so I figured they were just tired. They napped for a short time...
I'm a newbie, but Cackle, where I ordered my chicks, includes a "First Day" checklist. It reccomends 98-100 degrees at the floor directly under the heat lamp. It also says that it's a good idea to keep the water warm (about 98 degrees). If you give them cold water immediately after their...
I just got my order in today from Cackle. 10 RIRs, and 5 ea Barred Rocks and Australorps.
They're all awesom, but your right. My Ausies and BRs seem a lot more curious than the RIRs--though they are friendly (of course, they're only a couple days old!) They all love my wedding band!
Mine arrived from Cackle (aka Crackle )
I believe I have been converted to a chicken person. I had done this mostly for the kids, but after opening up the shipping container and seeing the peeps, man oh man. I am so excited. I probably sound like a giddy little girl, but these little...
