My University gives out research grants to students who are doing something productive, and my boyfriend and I are in the poultry business with chickens, ducks, turkeys and quail. So far, our jumbo coturnix are our favorites.
He is a biology major with an emphasis in genetics, and may be...
Lacy Blues, I just set a batch of coturnix today, it'll be two weeks, but I should have a few quail chicks.
This is my first time in years using an incubator and the first time I've used shipped eggs, so we'll see what happens!
"Cleo" came from a box of hatchery pullets, and it turns out that she is a "Clint" instead. Clint is a 4.5 month old Easter Egger rooster, and has been socialized every single day since I picked him up from the feed store at a day or two old. I paid about $5 for him, and he has been on Bar Ale...
I may have misread, but make sure you get "apple cider vinegar", and not "apple cider" and "vinegar", and mix it together yourself. Made that mistake before myself, I didn't give it to my chicks, so no big deal- but it cost me a few extra dollars and another trip to the store.
BirdFreak,
Why so much hate and ignorance? Sure, it was a rant, and that's what most rants are full of, but really. As a "bird rehab-er", I'm SURE you've come across plenty of people who can no longer care for their pets because of extenuating circumstances.
That's where I personally am at in...
He doesn't seem to be panting, it's been hot here so I've left the brooder lamp off during the day.
I can't figure out how to upload my own video, but it's sort of like what this duckling is doing.
That's the closest thing I could find
I brought home 2, 1 day old Cayugas last week. They came from a local breeder that I've bought ducklings from before, with no issues.
In the same brooder, I have 2 Khaki Campbell's that came from Ideal, they're about a week and a half old now, and healthy.
My problem is with one of the...
I give my flock all kinds of frozen fruit and yogurt on hot days. I just run leftover fruit through the blender and put it in ice cube trays, same with plain yogurt. I do the same thing for my dogs with the "Frosty Paws" recipe.
I like to wash down their run with cool hose water too, the pea...
After reading this ENTIRE thread, I finally have something to contribute!
My roommate is incredibly smart. He is a musician, artist, neurology major, hippie, paleo dieter, backyard philosopher, and a reader of anything and everything educational. I never would have expected anything dumb to...
I lost the majority of my flock (like many people on here, I hand raised them from day one, and considered my pets) from an irresponsible owner and her pit bull.
I learned that you can't report much unless you actually SAW it. If someone else saw it, they have to report it themselves.
My...
TOTALLY agree with SunnyDawn!
High school for me was miserable. I had a male bully who used to physically harass me, come to my house and vandalize it, you name it, he tried to torture me with it. On top of all the petty females there also, doing, well, normal petty teenage girl stuff.
Don't...
Seth, she's only about a week and a half old, so she doesn't look like too much :) I'll snap a picture for you though!
Americanvalkyrie, I'd hope nobody would throw their local egg suppliers under the bus! I was buying from a really nice lady in Sparks; she's not supposed to have chickens, but...
That's such an impressive setup! I love that you layered the wires like that, great idea to keep everyone in or out. My first batch of chicks could fit through the rectangular welded wire like it was nothing until they were about 7 weeks, so next improvement to the new run will probably be some...
That's fantastic! It's great to know people are excited about fresh food. I'm from a city where food comes from the grocery store, it's really refreshing to see people appreciate the hard work that goes into it all.
Do you know if they have to be "sanitized" like in some states, or packaged in...
