I've been wondering about the pine shavings, myself. The temp is right around 80, and they seem comfortable with that. I must plead ignorance with feeling the crop. I don't quite know what I'm feeling for, on this little chick. I compared to some of the others, and she may feel a bit...
Helol all,
I noticed, this morning, that one of my chicks was not acting quite right. She seemed to be swaying, forward and back, ever so slightly. As the day went on, she started opening her mouth at the same time and, now, she's emitting a sort of "squeeking" sound. It's not her normal...
So, I hatched a sweet little Sulmtaler chick yesterday morning. It is bright-eyed and alert, but hasn't been walking well and the problem seems to be getting worse. Recently, the Little One has been shaking it's head back and forth whenever it tries to take a step and then stumbles backwards...
Thank you for the advice! I'm feeling much calmer now. :-) It seems like it's not fully covering the pip, but I did pull the vents for more air.
Thanks again!
Hi all,
The internet makes it seem like if you look at your incubator wrong, all your chicks will die, so I've been pretty stressed through this whole process, but we're finally to hatch day and have our first pip!
My current "freak out" is over the plastic sheet which the thermometer is...
Yes, We were told Swedish Flower. Her being a mix of something else would not surprise me. Let's just say, our initial foray into Chickens has been an eye opener into human nature, as well!
Here is a close up of her, a few weeks ago:
Okay, I took some more pictures this morning. I also spent some time looking at pictures of Easter Eggers (now that I know the right breed!), and I'm feeling more and more like our "Fancy Rosebud" is a roo. Though, no crowing, and it seems like maybe the tail feathers should be farther along...
Whoa! I stopped getting notification of new posts, so I just saw most of the responses tonight! Sorry for my silence! I'll try to get a better pic tomorrow, as I'm STILL not sure!
I appreciate the input on Easter Egger over Ameraucana; I don't think the person I got the chicks from knew...
Thanks for the input, Makayla, those are some beautiful birds! One thing, I forgot to mention was that the chicken in question was only hatched on April 4. That being said, is it possible this is a juvenile rooster? I suuuuuuure hope you are right...our one hen needs a friend! :)
Thanks...
Hello All!
I must say, I'm completely new to this whole "chicken-thing," so any help will be appreciated! :)
We thought we were getting 4 pullets and it's now looking like 3 cockerels and 1 sweet, little pullet! Live and learn, right?
The one pictured is the last one we aren't completely...
While trying to do some further research on the use of the color red, I came across this (rather amusing) article with a contrary point of view. Thought I'd share!

That's exactly what I did, placed Steve in a dog kennel right next to the coop, for about an hour. I tried putting her back in and Blooma charged at her the minute Steve was back in the coop. So then it was Blooma's turn in time out! I'm going to keep them separate for the night and I'll try...
I am VERY new to raising chickens...we just brought home our 4 baby chicks last Tuesday (1 Black Copper Marans, 1 True Araucana and 2 Swedish Flower). They are 6 weeks old.
Since bringing them home, the Marans ("Steve") and one of the Swedish Flowers ("Blooma") have been "chest bumping,"...
